I'm reminded of this "little" beauty from WoW:

(click to show/hide)

And for the sake of dealing with sunder attacks, if the tower shield was made of metal then mithral, adamantine, or another metal that's stonger than steel would be preferred.

1.  Take Naberius, Divine Might, Divine Shield, and Hellreaver.  Houserule that all swift action 'paladin things' can be activated as a single swift action.  Include Battle Blessing.  Be the ball - the best ball.

2.  http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?123630-3-X-Person-Man-s-Guide-to-Shields - dip fighter for moar feats, be captain america.

3.  Freakin' Battle Blessing, man.  Plus a wand gauntlet or something.  Cure light wounds as a swift action really ain't that bad.  There's also some attackey paladin spells in Spell Compendium from memory, being a Justice Power Ranger isn't a terrible use of time.

4.  Charging Smite and pounce.  Just.. do it.

5.  Rhino's Rush + Charging Smite and pounce is good times.

6.  Iaijutsu Master +Iaijutsu is a very interesting kind of paladin to play.

7.  Pocket cleric.  Pocket sorcerer... ehhhh.  Pocket cleric?  Thematic!  Have the cleric be yoda, and never explain why he is in your backpack.

8.  Battle jump and pounce.  Suddenly, your shit is not quite so terrible because double damage is.. double damage.

9.  Luminous Armour sounds like a better idea than full plate, especially if you're rocking a monk's belt or a decisive strike monk dip combined with ascetic mage (ascetic knight?  or just a good wis).

10.  Spam diplomacy.  Paladins are also faces, sorta, so spamming diplo on everything can also be their job.

The Charging Smite ACF can't be taken here because the Sword of Celestia ACF has been taken instead.  The party also has a charger anyway.

Diplomacy in battle doesn't really work due to the time requirements for making the check and rushing stuff isn't necessarily an option.  Out of combat could work like usual but we don't have any details on whether there have been houserules on it (which there usually are for anyone who knows how borked it can get).

Just going to be lazy on this one. Really, really lazy. If he can change his feats, then EWP a spiked chain. And Combat Reflexes, even if he's Dex poor (+1 or +2 will do).

Because it's solved every melee "I don't feel like I'm doing enough" problem since 3.5ed came out.

He could probably even find a small, one-handed chain if he needs the board.

A small spiked chain won't give reach for a medium creature though, if you're going by Rules Compendium anyway.

Rules Compendium p. 151:

A wielder gains no reach from a reach weapon that is too small. No additional reach is granted by a reach weapon that is too big.

But that's a moot point since the spinning sword and kusari-gama exist and they are one-handed reach+adjacent and light reach+adjacent, respectively.

I discussed the player's fate yesterday.

He chose to switch his Paladin to Sacred Shield Archetype, but will take only 5 levels while keeping all levels of Hellreaver.

Also he replaced his Improved Initiative feat for Divine Might. He abandoned the Bastard sword and is looking for a feat to replace the EWP; Law Devotion, most likely.

And he will spend some resources to make his weapon better.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

Sacred Shield?  get him to look at the Captain America link I posted up above

lots of 3.5 support for bouncing your shield between people and then catching it again
