[5e] Michael's Specific Warlock Patrons Compendium
« on: July 18, 2015, 06:07:48 PM »
Q: Michael, what do you mean "Specific Warlock Patron"? Doesn't 5th edition have options to let a warlock get it's power's from a specific Source?

You're right! It does have three options: The fiend (demon, devils), the Archfey (very powerful fey), and the Great Old One (Cthulhu or other eldtrich abominations). However, these options are somewhat limiting. Lets say, for example, you want to play a warlock of Levistus, lord of the 5th circle of hell. The fifth circle, Stygia, is completely frozen. However, a warlock of Levistus would have to take The Fiend Patron option, as devils are a type of fiend. His expanded spell list would contain some spells based on dominating enemies, but also a bunch of really  fire spells, which wouldn't be very thematic.

This is my attempt to fix that. I plan on developing a bunch of warlock patron options, starting with the lords of the Nine Hells (as of the DMG for 5th edition). In the future, I plan on developing a bunch more subclasses for demon lords, some notable fey, some far realms creatures, and maybe even angels. Links to all Patron subclasses I create will be listed below upon their completion.

Devils:

Demons

If you use any of these warlock subclasses in a game, post a link to the game in this thread or send me a pm! I don't have the ability to playtest all of these personally, so I'd love to see how these classes work for you guys. Any constructive feedback or criticism is welcome.

I really like the concept, but many of the abilities are horribly unbalanced.
Even between the Pacts you've created, there is a great disparity between the strength and at which level it is granted.

I'll try and give you some better feedback next week, when I have some free time.

I must admit I am fairly new to home brewing. I'd love to see your feedback whenever you have the time.

Also, i uploaded a lot more of the classes I've completed for your use/criticism.

Here's some notes on the 1st three devil's. Probably all I will get to

Starting with the basis of the core Patrons, this is the kind of ability granted

Archfey
Fey Presence: 1 action, 1/short
Misty Escape: 1 reaction, 1/short
Beguiling Defense: Passive, unlimited reaction
Dark Delerium: 1 action, 1/short

Fiend
Dark One's Blessing: Conditional passive activation
Dark One's Own Luck: pseudo-reaction, 1/short
Fiendish Resilience: Passive
Hurl Through Hell: 1 action, 1/long

Old One
Awakened Mind: Conditional Passive
Entropic Ward: 1 reaction, 1/short
Though Shield: Passive, unlimited reaction
Create Thrall: 1 action, 1 target at a time

Derived General Template
1: Conditional Passive or action 1/short
6: reaction
10: Passive, possible rider reaction
14. Action, long or short

I would somewhat suggest that the Patron's abilities be well suited to either Pact Weapon (more martial), or Tome (more caster), but the base Patrons aren't strictly so.

Zariel
Might Makes Right: Dark Ones Blessing++. Adv/Dis for 3 rounds is ridiculous. Perhaps if it was 1st attack roll or save within the 1st 3 rounds.
Break The Hordes: The number of Eldritch Blasts you could generate is ridiculous, even if it is only clearing peons
Infernal Legions: This should be a passive
Unbreakable: Needs to be 1/short or 1/long

Dispater
Infernal Bulwark: Appropriate as a sort of passive
Aura of Fortitude: Choice of aura benefit leads to confusion or arbitrary choice when an enemy attack lands. Should be Warlocks choice, or even only AC, given Dispaters mantra. 6th tends to be a reaction.
Hellish Warding: Double concentration is an interesting balance consideration I've had some balance discussion about... with no conclusion. The question is whether any Warlock Abjurations are concentration and last long enough for this to be action worthy. This is passive-like, so probably the right level.
Iron Flesh: This tends to be an action, and I'm not sure invulnerability even shows up in high level spells. This would be much better as something like 1/x Iron Body from 3e.

Mammon
Devil's Tongue: Seems reasonable
Goldsight: Problem is it becomes almost a guaranteed advantage againt any relevant humanoid targets at this point.
Great Temptation: This tends to be the passive slot. This also comes in sooner than typical spellcasting progression. Patrons don't tend to grant spells. The spell list or invocations are better suited.
Midas Touch: Are you intending to modify the duration to permanent? Could have it rider a shrink or hollow and give a suggested value range of CR x dX.
