never thought of it as problematic untilllllll we saw conceal thoughts. WOW is just a word, but I think it encompasses our thoughts on this power, WOW. Really is this spell a under-leveled joke? Its better than most similar "buff"spells of all levels, I mean a +10 to bluff...could easily be a 5th level spell, it also adds +4 saves vs mind probes and read thoughts and its 1 hour/level..for a zero level power???

whats the cost of making a little crystal or item that has conceal thoughts on all the time?

It's a first level power, not a 0th level (0th level powers aren't a thing in 3.5, that's a 3.0 psionics thing).  But yeah, it's pretty good.

A continuous use item of a 1st level power would cost (spell level) x (caster level) x 2000, so 2000gp.  But when creating custom magic items, you should also compare the price using other formulas.  In this case, it would be better to use the formula for an item that grants a skill bonus, or (bonus)^2 x 100, so 10,000gp. 

Considering that you could buy a 2k gp item around level 4, and doing so would approximately double your effectiveness in that skill, I'd say 2k is too low.  10k might be too high; you can't afford that until level 7 or so, and by then an item that gives +10 bluff might not be the most effective use of your money.  Still, 10k is closer than 2k.  Maybe call it 8,000?

It's a 0 level power in Pathfinder, maybe that's what he's referring to?

Pathfinder seems to have the same magic item pricing system from what I can tell though.  And I agree with linklord, pricing custom magic items is always tricky.

oh yah Im sorry were kind of a blend, pathfinder, 3.5 and some 3.0, with PF being the base. So it is a 0 level power. How much would this cost by raw, rai and what you would charge? 3.5 and PF are same as far as cost, Ive just never made a item from 0 level?

In 3.5, 0th level spells in wondrous items cost half as much as a 1st level spell. It's noted beneath the chart for creating magic items on the srd and dmg.

Above applies to all magic items, not just wondrous

Zero level spells in 3.0e and 3.5e, powers in 3.0e "only".
Some of those powers got up-dated into 3.5e, some inspite of being level 0 in 3.0e, are now level 1s.
If it's not an updated power, then no problems :  0.5 * 1 * 2000 = 1000 gp.

But remember, psi can't have nice things ... then all will be well.

The spell provides a numerical bonus.  Therefor the pricing for that particular bonus supersedes the pricing for an at will version of the spell.  The charge for at will spells is the low man on the pricing totem poll, only to be used when no other pricing schemes are applicable.

Its in the DMG.

That's not a rule.  That's not even a suggestion.  That's just saying "hey, this is the easiest way to do this.  If you don't want to use the easy way, here's some other guidelines."

That's as concrete as it gets as far as custom magic item rules. They're entirely within the realm of DM fiat.

That is considered to "trump" the other rules by most people, though. Thus why an "always on" sword of True Strike should be priced somewhere in the ballpark of 200,000 gp (it does half what a +20 sword would do, so it's about equal to a +10 sword), not 2,000 gp (which is the price of an "always on" 1st level spell should be).

If you read the sidebar that way, then I'm afraid there are no rules for custom item pricing which would qualify as "concrete" to you, so you're stuck with the items that already exist and have assigned prices.

That's fine. Using only official material is a valid way to play the game, and if you invest in books like the Magic Item Compendium, you probably won't run out of stuff to craft for a long time.

Why would anyone craft a Girdle of Giant Strength for 16000, when they could craft an always on Animal Affinity for 10800?   And would anyone actually pay the 100k for a +5 Greater Magic Weapon when they can just get a +5 sword for half that?   Conceal Thoughts gives bonuses to saves and skills.  Use the rules for always on bonuses to saves and skills.  Its the specific that trumps the general spell cost.
