Sneak Attack & Magic Missile
« on: December 13, 2021, 05:12:41 PM »
PC may soon get magic missile, CL3, which means 2 missiles.
He has 1d6 sneak attack.

Assume he wins initiative, so the target is flat-footed, and sneak attack applies.

1) Ami I correct in assuming SA applies to magic missile?

2) Would SA apply once total, or once per missile, or once per target?

TIA

SA shouldn't apply to spells, spells aren't weapon.

RAI Precedent is set in 3.5e with the spellwarp sniper PrC allowing you to SA with rays.

Assuming you are allowing SA on spells, I would disallow SA on MM simply because MM has no attack roll so the flavor of "striking a vital" isn't really possible as the magic guarantees a hit not a vital hit.

If you did apply SA, you've already thrown the balance table away, opinion you may as well allow it per missile.

Thanks.  Not applying SA to spells makes everything simple.

Complete Arcane has a section on spells as weapons, which would cover when they can be used to sneak attack as well.

Basic version, a spell must require an attack roll to count as a weapon and to use with sneak attack.  Some additional caveats (summoned monsters don't get to benefit from your weapon-enhancing stuff, as one example), but that's the most basic.

Cool.  Magic missile doesn't require an attack roll, so it wouldn't get SA.
And Complete Arcane mentions that a spell that allows multiple attacks, only the 1st gets SA.
