[3.5] Favored Soul
« on: August 22, 2021, 06:47:15 PM »
I was checking over the differences between a mystic and Favored Soul, when I found an oddity. There doesn't seem to be any restriction/punishment for having multiple gods, though they also can't select a pantheon or a theme. Now certain campaigns(faerun) present problems but still really restrict you. All I can see is an ask your DM issue.

Anyone know of any multiple diety feats/abilties or done anything with god trading in campaign?

Usually, your deity doesn't matter for much. There are some feats with patron prerequisites, though: you can try combining them for fun and profit.

Most of those are initiate feats, many of which have Cleric as a prerequisite, but worry not: according to the rules, Favoured Soul counts towards that.

Dragon Magic on Initiate Feats says

Any character of a class that must select a deity and that uses the cleric spell list for spellcasting can treat his level in that class as if it were a cleric level for the purpose of qualifying for an initiate feat. For example, a favored soul (see Complete Divine) who had chosen Bahamut as his deity and who had reached 3rd level could select the Initiate of Bahamut feat. (15)

thx for the quote. I've been having a devil of a time with this class, as its mostly been chucked into limbo. Guess I'll have to go back over those initiate feat rules.

Still, the patron deity rules are a mess...

You are welcome.

Considering you were looking at the Mystic and the Favoured Soul, it seems that you are interested in a spontaneous spellcasting class that uses the Cleric spell list. Have you considered the Spontaneous Divine Caster variant for the Cleric?

Forgot about that, comparisons are really terrible - for mystics. Though its weird how clerics lose their spontaneous healing.

Did a search through initiate feats to find that Lathander is surprisingly boss; and Heretic of Faith is better for favored soul than I first thought. Lathander could truly become the lord of light, "I beseech thee, send down your light, LASER RIFLE!" (On trebuchet, on dither bomb, on warblade aptitude enhancer /~)

Too bad this only applies to initiate feats, otherwise you would see a heterodox favored soul/binder gain something for nothing.

Dragonlance classes are mostly crap, the only one worth trying is the Nightstalker which gets Ghost cohorts. All the rest (Mystic, Mariner, Noble,  Master, etc) do their things worse than classes from other books. Dragonlance didn't get much TLC in 3.x, it is what it is.

In a total step to the weird, the Dreaming Dark has favored weapon mind blade. So a favored soul of the dreaming dark is proficient with a soulknife class feature!? :banghead Like favored weapon unarmed strike wasn't difficult enough...

Presumably there either aren't any favoured souls of the Dreaming Dark, or a favoured soul of the Dreaming Dark would need homebrewed alternative class features to make sense (so that they can have a mind blade). A mind-blade-wieling divine character would be cool, but is not provided by existing rules.

Touchstone(CoE:War) is very nice for floating bonus feat after you've gotten WF@3rd.

Swift Wing (DM) & Sanctified One(CC) can allow you to worship multiple deities(&favored weapons) if DM permits it.

Sovereign Speaker is the boss of favored weapons if you can swing it.

Dracolyte & Knight of the Raven (+BAB) seem to be the best for gaining a domain(for the spells known) & turning, but there might be others...

@Mael, agree with you on mindblade, and found Sanctified One as best way to write-in mindblade abilities.

Anyone have good suggestions for good exotic or other weapons that make Heretic of Faith worth the feat? Ones I've found include ballista and blast rifle(Temple of the Frog). Also nothing quite says HERETIC like taking a level of Warblade to constantly exchange your deific weapon.
