[5E] PC Homebrew: Ravenloft ... becoming a darklord?
« on: October 03, 2022, 10:27:32 AM »
Ok, I am in a standard 5E Curse of Strahd campaign. The DM is interested in taking the campaign beyond 10th but wants my character, a Vengeance Paladin to become a dark lord by the end of the Curse of Strahd campaign. And wants my character to then become a NPC "big bad" for at least part of the levels beyond 10th. We are looking for a big way for my PC to become the villain. Looking for a really compelling reason that the party and my character would become strongly opposed - after the CoS module ends.

Any interesting suggestions or ideas?

PS - Are there rules anywhere on how one becomes a darklord?

In both AD&D 2E and D&D 3.x Ravenloft materials, there are extensive rules for powers checks and corruption, eventually culminating into becoming an NPC Darklord. The gist is: Keep committing evil acts, and eventually commit an Act of Ultimate Darkness so vile that it qualifies you for darklordhood. Beyond that, the rules for the process, the resulting powers and what kind of domain you receive are very very vague. Written darklords have always varied wildly in power level, from Jack of Farelle who is just a jackalwere tinker up to Vecna when he was a demi-god.

Mistipedia is the go-to resource for Ravenloft fluff and what was printed in what book, and has an article that goes into greater detail on darklordhood: https://www.fraternityofshadows.com/wiki/Category:Darklord

Hey man thanks. Since I got your attention can you recommend any large sized "easy to see at a distance" wall maps of Barovia? Even if at a reasonable cost. We are running 5E.

Curse of Strahd has a detailed map for 5E Barovia.

Mistipedia has a rough map for 3E Barovia: http://fraternityofshadows.com/wiki/File:Jester-Barovia.png

Fan-made 3E Barovia maps: http://fraternityofshadows.com/GryphonHill/barovia/maps.html

2E has two different maps, easiest to tell apart by the presence or absence of Gundar(Gundar was originally a separate domain, until in the 2E metaplot Strahd invaded it, killed its darklord and added it to Barovia).
