He doesnt want the temple thief idea, he's leaning more towards the researcher of forbidden knowledge bit.  Archivist variant it is, though god knows what i'll do for the non magic variant.

Hm... non-magic researcher of forbidden knowledge that isn't a temple thief... some kind of tweaked Factotum that gets extraordinary martial maneuvers instead of arcane dilettante and, uh... dark knowledge instead of opportunistic piety... and maybe Knowledge Devotion as a bonus feat in place of something?

Well, there are a couple good homebrewed extraordinary ranged disciplines + surreptitious bandit is more about being sneaky than melee. Though, I'd bet he just wants a class that doesn't "fight," and without spells... yeah... really both of these classes don't work if he doesn't want them to be able to fight at all or cast spells...

Indiana Jones or Laura Croft = stereotype adventurer archaeologist
Whip is too stereotyped. IJ gets into bar fights like a Monk (not like 3e monk tho')
Could find more powerful magic items, than most Wizard can whip up.
[ Commoner 1 + Artifact ] = starting point to try for balance.

Ambassador is kinda tough. "Diplomacy" equivalent at State or Army level.
Non-combat but still for Encounters , based enchantments / telepathy.
Deanna Troi on occasion, maybe.
Luck bonuses (!!) , some divinations , decipher script , some roguish stuff.
Potions of happy beer / potions of sign this treaty.
Needs to be able to Escape, sometimes a lot.
Extra travel capabilities. Former Army leader or Thrallherd or Summoner.

Could use some of it for inspiration though.
