Grabbing 2 Heward's bedrolls for twice daily sleeping
« on: January 11, 2012, 09:49:36 AM »
Heward's bedroll allows you to sleep in it for one hour to get the full benefits of 8 hours of rest.  They're only 3,000 GP, if you got 2, would that allow you to have a pair of 12 hour shifts each day, starting each shift with an hour of rest, and an hour of spell preparation?  It wouldn't let you use limited use per day abilities more times (I think? see below), and spell slots used in the last 8 hours can't be recovered, but for the price, it still seems like a decent option.  But does it work?  The problem is that a wizard's spells are described as a daily allotment.

Though come to think, on another tangent, are there any rules that say when you recover abilities that have limited daily uses?  If you use smites, rages, etc right before bed, then wake up and use them, you're theoretically using more than what you get in a day in a 24 hour period, which in normal circumstances is no big deal, but with the proposed use of dual bedrolls, it makes me curious if there are rules that say what you actually recover when you rest for 8 hours somewhere.

Heward's Fortifying Bedroll
Less well known than Heward's other great
creation but still a boon to adventurers everywhere,
this bedroll grants the benefit a full
night's sleep in a fraction of the time.
Description: This item appears to
be a normal, if well made, bedroll. The
cushioning is thick, the stitching
skilled. It is made of dark green cloth
with a dull yellow interior. It smells
faintly comforting, a mix of burning
firewood and goose down.
Activation: To activate the magic of
the bedroll, you need merely climb into it
(a move action) and spend 1 uninterrupted
hour resting. Each bedroll functions once
per day.
Effect: Heward's fortifying bedroll grants you
the benefits of a full 8 hours of rest—including
the elimination of fatigue or exhaustion, natural
healing, and the ability to prepare or ready arcane spells—
over the course of a single hour. Spells cast within the last 8
hours still count against your daily limit as normal.

... or even get a 3rd one, for more fun.

As far as downtime shenanigans go, it's no where near as powerful
as psi powerpoint recharge. But it's in the same conceptual ballpark.

I'm sure a specific trick or two can be found.

A "day" is relative to the part is the only thing really mentioned. All that covers is if you went to a fast time plane to a slow one and back to normal no matter the time passed on the material plane, whatever you experienced is your relative time passed.

The only person to have an exact point of what is a day is the Divine classes, as they must pray at certain hours. So if you defined a day to end if you were to gain the benefit of eight hours a rest a Paladin would refresh his Smites but couldn't refresh his spells until the real morning making things extremely complex for him to keep track of. An hour to reset smites, 8 hours to refresh spell slots, 24 hours to prepare spells, ugh, who wants more paperwork?

What I'd do is stick to the eight hour concept. Any ability used within the last eight hours, be it spell slots, charges on an item, uses per day, etc, won't recover until you're next rest. Naturally it would depower some concepts, but those abilities were not meant to be spammed when they were given a limitation anyway and in all fairness magical items are based off spells which do use an eight hour cool down.

Unless I missed an errata somewhere you still need to get around this.

After using Heward's fortifying bedroll, you can't gain the same benefit again (either from the same or a different item) until 48 hours have passed.

I'm pretty sure you didn't. I was waiting to get home to verify this before posting, so thank you for posting first.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure this is a bombo.

It gets better. Rainbow FallsCM is a 1/day triple duration buff you any transmutation spell for an ungodly thought of 2,000 gold. With Persist, that's 72 hours. Extend, using the multiplier rules, bumps this to 96 hours.

Since you can level up in seven days, you basically only have to cast your favorite buff twice per level. It's like someone looked at the Arcane Swordsage and thought to them selves, "I just wish I could run around with twenty buffs spells all the time." and then wrote the stuff to do it.

Good news though, mention Rainbow Falls if the DM questions the use of ASS ;)

Actually, Extended Persisted spells last four times as long, since time is a real quantity and the 2x2=3 rule only affects die rolls.

(nerf)

I slept an extra 2 hours yesterday, took a 2 hour nap, and
took another 2 hour nap. But I only got to memorize spells once ...  >:(
