Improve Touch AC w/o Abjuration?
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:00:46 PM »
Against recommendations we have a wizard who swore off abjuration. We're now in the mid-teens and the wizard is discovering that at high levels, abjuration actually matters.

Are there any good long-term spells to buff touch-AC or miss chance that are not Abjuration? (Long Term for this argument is 10min/lvl or longer). Right now the fairly solid fallback is Greater Mirror Image, but accomplishing protection with 1 spell is better than doing so with 4.

Books allowed: All FR, all other WotC that aren't world-specific. Oh, no psionic.

Depending on his other banned school, he could just use overland flight and some variation of invisibility, then hover over the battlefield, dropping summoned creatures, buffs, battefield control, etc while laughing manically.

Alter Self into something with high AC?  Note that if you use a spell that changes your type first (like polymorph), Alter Self becomes even better.

Edit: Sorcerers also get Wings of Cover, which is a great defensive spell if you can find a way to add it to your list.

You can boost touch AC with Ghost Ward armor & shield (+1 bonus) and a chained Magic Vestment...?

Alter Self into a Troglodyte for +6 Natural
Bite of the Wererat for +3 AC from Dex and +3 enhancement to Natural
use UMD on a wand of Scintillating Scales (the one spell you're genuinely missing from Abjuration for this purpose)

Get someone else to be an Incantatrix (he can't be one because he banned Abjuration), and persist these three spells for a net +12 to touch AC.  Depending on what kinds of touch AC we're dealing with, you can also include stuff like Luminous Armor (applies a -4 penalty to attacks directed at the caster, touch or otherwise), and a Lesser Crystal of Arrow Deflection (+5 untyped bonus to AC against all ranged attacks).

Eternal wands are nice. Any arcane caster can activate them, even if the spell isn't on their list. I know the value of UMD, but if his character doesn't already have it, this is an alternative albeit not necessarily a good one because of the low caster level.
Something Funny?

Yes.  Sadly, good dispel magic users pretty much instanuke any item-based buffs.
