Hairy Spider discussion
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:09:52 AM »
In the original Monsters of Faerun book, the hairy spider was just a relatively big spider.  Then came the web enhancement here which gives it an LA +0.

The question becomes, is this intentional?  On the first page of this enhancement, it says
Quote
As in the revised Monster Manual, level adjustments are not included for monsters whose level adjustments would make them epic-level characters, or for creatures with Intelligence scores of 2 or below...

Whoops.  They definitely gave LA to a couple things without any Int scores, and the regular Hairy Spider is among them.

Would you allow such a character?  How would you play it if you did?

Awaken the shit out of it. Then be a swashbuckler for being a pirate spider, complete with a cute little cutlass.

I'd play as one designate myself as my own familiar, cast familiar pocket and fold up into myself.

There's porn for that.

There's porn for that.

But not porn that makes you effectively invulnerable due to not existing.

1) Buy a portable hole.
2) Cast Drawmij's Instant Summons on it.
3) Open the hole, climb in, and cast Magnificent Mansion.
4) Enter the Mansion and close the door.
5) Trigger the Instant Summons.

Percy... what exactly would that do?

McBeardly, I dare you to make a Hairy Spider vestige based on that concept.

What this does is create a mansion inside of a hole.  The hole can then be summoned inside of the mansion, effectively eliminating any entrance to the mansion, but eliminating the exit at the same time.

My Monster Manual lies to me:  it states that a pegasus is white or occasionally brown when everyone knows that pegasi ought to be blue with rainbow stripes.

Exactly... :)  You can enter the portable hole but not the Mansion since the door is still closed and you're still inside.  If you open the door you maybe could go into the hole and then into the Mansion to find the hole on the floor.  Alternatively you can go the other way -- open the door and climb out of the hole back into the Mansion.  However, you again have to have the door and the hole both open.  At that point it's a closed loop.  If either the hole or the Mansion door are closed, you can't open them from the relevant side so it's no problem.

Anyway, it's a mobius setup and no one can get in or out without planeshifting, I think.  Assuming you can planeshift directly out of a Mansion...

What happens if you're still in the mansion when the duration expires?

More importantly, what happens when the hole is inevitably in the mansion when the spell expires?

Yes, that was the question I was getting at. And you, though. I mean... that's a little confusing.
