Flatland d20 3.5?
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:15:13 AM »
I had a weird adventure where players went to flatland. I was thinking of writting it up when I needed a break from my handbook project. Anyone know of any d20 3.x material for playing in 2-dimensional universes?

Yes, the material in D&D Boxed set immortals has some interesting materials on non-standard dimensionality. Got it, read it.

No, I don't need reference to flatland, or sphereland, or the movies. I read the original 19th century book and the sequel, thank you.

Is it a top-down universe like a Zelda game or a sidescrolling universe like a Mario game?
Hmm.

Neither, skydragonknight.  It's a two-dimensional universe that possesses only length and depth.  Therefore, its inhabitants only perceive a flat field of view, like looking at a piece of glass edge-on.  Flatlanders themselves are geometric shapes who identify each other by inferring the measure of their angles; there is a fog in Flatland that causes objects to fade as they get further away.  It's also entirely grey-scale, but that's a cultural thing explained in the book.

The first half is a satire of the 19th century French aristocracy.  The second half is a good primer on thinking in other dimensions (like imagining the hypercube, a 4-dimensional object).  It's a good read, and it's public domain so it's totally free.  Her it is at the Gutenberg Project.

I think I should move this to homebrew at this point. Here is the thread.
