Escaping Homebrewed Plane of Mirrors
« on: April 17, 2012, 02:29:43 PM »
3.5 with houserules

Ok, I’m DM, my 12th level PCs are trapped on a homebrewed plane of mirrors. I am looking for a cool way for them to exit the plane. Plane Shift does not work correctly it just splits them into multiple characters on that same plane of mirrors. Any suggestions for a cool exit method? Was thinking of some sort of ritual? Or item? Or event that they have to be part of. Want to make it somewhat challenging but not impossible. I’m open to any ideas.

Thanks,
Necro

Can the mirrors be broken, and do they act like regular mirrors(reflecting normal stuff) or weird mirrors(reflecting other places and times, and you can step from image to image)? If the latter, what if there is some pattern to determine what mirrors connect to each other, and thus, how you can force it to point offplane to exit.

The mirrors can be broken. They are underneath everything in the natural environment. And they appear in certain locations. And they are more like crystals than modern "mirrors."I like the alignment angle. But is there a way to make that work on something other than a single knowledge check or roll?

align two mirrors to be perfectly parallel and stand between them. any character looking into the recursive reflection is booted out of the plane. add having to be invisible in order to be able to see the recursive focal point for extra kicks.

a pc and one of their mirror duplicates (via plane shift?) has to catch each others' glance in the same mirror at the same time.

slay duplicate, anoint a mirror with the blood of the fallen, mirror then becomes a portal for that person only. except that it works either way... hope the party can tell the two apart....

trick / force a duplicate (or allow it to be a pc, if you are feeling generous) into bull rushing their opposite (or another, if a pc) through a mirror. pity the last person left behind....

charge a mirror with negative or positive energy, and look into it at the same time plane shift is cast. instead of creating a mirror duplicate, it creates an anti-duplicate - as in anti-matter. mutual annihilation can either cast the annihilated one out of the plane, or cast everyone else out of the plane. nobel sacrifice.

perform an action or cause an effect that a mirror cannot duplicate.

go through the back of a mirror, possibly leaving behind a duplicate to terrorize the rest of the party.

crack a mirror knowingly and deliberately accepting 7 years bad luck (curse / eyebite effect?) the crack has to be from one side to the other without actually shattering the mirror.

pcs have to make a rhyme with "mirror, mirror, on the wall..." with the content being something about escaping. each rhyme must be unique, except for the first line. sarcastic entity critiquing their efforts (and possibly allowing diplomacy / bluff / intimidate checks) optional. suggesting that it only speaks in haiku, but only hears couplets.

must accept a quest/geas from a duplicate, something that a duplicate would want.

question: are you using the standardized layout for the mirror plane(s) with constellations? or something completely different?

Alright, an idea is, each mirror is linked to a mirror outside, but each outside mirror is represented by multiple mirrors. To find a way out, you must piece these mirrors together in a jigsaw, which would transmute the mirror into a one way portal to the 'real' mirror.

You stand if front of a mirror and cast the Somatic part of plane shift in reverse motion, so that your reflected character casts it correctly.

Or you cast in complete darkness, so nothing is reflected at all.

You could tell the mirror Anti-Pun-pun,
or the mirror Anti- past time duplicate of Pun-pun,

I like the aligned mirror idea.  Use some spell (move earth?) to align the plane so that the hidden mirrors underlying the fabric of the reality are aligned to cancel each other out and allow the party to escape.  Alternatively, party just has to step into any mirror - make it a riddle, so figuring this out from clues/actually trying it are the only real barriers.

If party hates puzzles, combat mission to break into the base of the guy nearly finished constructing a canceled mirror array (that he's planning to use to gain infinite power, but the party can use to escape).

Or the party can finish it to can infinite power... over the mirror dimension. And nowhere else.
