Vow of Poverty: gifting?
« on: May 19, 2012, 10:19:52 AM »
I'm a Druid with the vow of poverty. Can I buy my animal companion (riding dog) barding and other gear?

Peace,
Necro

Nope, since you can't own money ever, you can not....
What you could arguably do is implore a player from your group to gift it to your companion or trade favors for it.....

No, as you don't possess money or use it. You get a few minor things (clothes, spell pouch, simple weapon) and that's it. You're supposed to donate your profits from adventuring to worthy churches and causes.

There's nothing RAW stopping a companion from equipping your animal companion, though I sort of struggle with the flavor of it. If your character is this big, exalted, no wealth type, it seems strange that he'd go that far but be fine with his companion getting equipped out.

Can't I take treasure from the dungeon and gift it to charity? Let's say I am by myself and clear a small dungeon can I carry back the gold I find to donate to the poor? Does that then allow me to take treasure and gift it to my animal companion?

Only if your animal companion is a registered 501(c)(3). You could also try setting up a charity whose purpose is to outfit and support local adventuring parties and set strenuous grant approval criteria. The real world IRS tends to look unfavorably on that sort of thing, and I doubt your DM will see it any differently.

If you give gifts to your animal companion, you are encouraging dependence and reliance on you, as well as covetousness and sloth, which can only be to the animal's detriment.  Your companion should lead by example just like you do.
