My DM is mad at me- Help me McGyver my way out?
« on: May 29, 2012, 02:49:41 AM »
I've had this long time friend who decided he'd give me a 1 v 1 session, and he enjoyed it. After a while, though, he started finding my interpretations of the rules silly but still allowed me to do what I did as long as I'd follow RAW. Now he's mad at me, and he's figuring that he'll throw a Troll in my face, when I'm but a 3rd Level Factotum. He did specify that it'd have a template that'd make it lose natural regen, though, but I don't know what that could be.

Here's the info I have:

All sources are allowed.

Level 3 Human Factotum
24 HP, 14 Str/ 8 dex/14 Con/18 Int/8 wis/15 Cha, 15 AC, +2 BAB

Feats: Able Learner (I am aiming to become a Chameleon), Darkstalker and Knowledge Devotion.

As a 3rd Level Factotum, I may cast 1 Level 1 Wizard/Sorc spell per day as a spell like ability.

I have access to a non-military Horse. My only useful equipment in the situation I'm in consists of a Chain Shirt, a Masterwork Duom, a sling, 70 GP, and a masterwork tool for concentration/autohypnosis/use magic device, and a healing belt. I do have access to some small "shops" (more like Fences, but the prices are the same regardless), too. I had more, but I don't have access to them in the actual situation because the character is mostly imprisoned.

The area of the fight (I only have a vague idea of what it is, no actual map) is a large room filled with landscapes such as cliffs, trees and tunnels.

The stats of some skills that might be useful for the fight are +12 intimidation (I doubt I could do anything with that, though), +1 Move Silenty and +1 Hide, +10 UMD. All pretty awful, really. My Hide and Move Silently suffered too much from me trying to get some prereqs for some PrCs.

As I've prepared for this fight and know it is coming, my DM allows me to start with a +5 insight bonus due to my Knowledge Devotion (basically let me take 20 with it), since the character's background heavily involves Giants anyway, and for the sake of "giving me a chance". I'm honestly at a lost here about what could be done to save my hide here. Anyone willing to give me a hand? Thanks a lot for your time and all. <3

Well, regeneration requires a con score to work.  It's possible he's throwing a zombie troll at you.  That's only be CR 2.

Can you Arcane Dilettante Silent Image at your level? If the template in question is an undead one and it turns out a mindless one - like a zombie or skeleton - Illusions are *really* effective because they're just_that_stupid. For example: 1. Dig Hole. 2. Cast Silent Image over hole of ordinary ground. 3. Position yourself on opposite side of hole and comment on how tasty your brain is.
Hmm.

Well, your character knows the fight is coming up? Have the character do in-character research on the creature.  You've got knowledge devotion, so you have all creature knowledges trained.  If it is knowledge religion, it is undead.  If it is Knowledge Nature, it is still probably a Giant.  See if you can figure out more details about *this particular* troll.

I think he wants to beat you ...  :-\

You might be well served, to let him.
But put up a good fight, for ego's sake.

Factotum 3 getting your DM annoyed indicates to me he's either very new to DMing or doesn't like the concept of an uber-skill monkey who can fight as well as your basic fighter (not that hard).  Even with 1 million fonts, Factotum 3 is nothing to write home about.

At least you didn't dip Cloistered Cleric.  That's always my level 2 on Factotums as it just adds pure gravy.  Of course...a cloistered cleric 20 obliterates anything the Factotum can do (including cunning surge) starting at the time you get Divine Power (some would argue earlier).

I suggest you get more players and/or gestalt.  Gestalt + Factotum = good times.
