Help with Sorcerer
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:57:04 AM »
Starting a new campaign with level 1 sorcerer but my DM said that we might reach epic levels and also it's the first campaign I am playing where every material is legal.
I am going to make a sorcerer and here is what decisions I've made for the build.

- Race: i chose human, I know a venerable dragonwrough kobold might be best but it will be more enjoyable for me playing a human, role-playing wise, and also I don't want to piss off my co-players from the beginning!
- Ability scores: we have 85 points starting from 0 and each increase costs 1 so I'm thinking str 7, dex 18, con 16, int 18, wis 8, cha 18
- I am going to plan my build through level 20 and it's going to be Sorcerer(5)/MotAO(2)/Incantatrix(3)/MotAO(+2)/Incantatrix(+7)/Sorcerer(+1)

What i need is help with some decisions
1) Would you recommend a different stat allocation?
2) Is it worth it to take Rapid Metamagic since I am going to persist Arcane Spellsurge? Or is it better if I don't persist Arcane Spellsurge?
3) Invisible Spell vs Snowcasting???
4) Is Residual Magic a good option?
5) I'll take Easy Metamagic from dragon mags but I am not aware if there are any other good feats in there so I am hoping for suggestions.
6) Besides the 3 prereq feats I am getting 10 more, this is my selection:
Extend Spell, Persistent Spell, Empower Spell, Twin Spell, Split Ray, Fell Drain, Easy Metamagic, Maximize Spell, plus two more. Suggestion would be welcome.
8) What school should I drop when I become an incantatrix? I am thinking illusion but I am open to suggestions.

I will be posting more questions until I finish the character. I'll post my spell selection for revision.
I want to mention the style of play I am going to adopt to help you help me:p I'll be mainly a debuffer and when the enemies are crippled I switch to damage spells. If things get bad and/or spells are running out the last trick will be shapechange (polymorph at lower levels) + persisted wraithstrike.

Thanks in advance!!!

Human is always a good choice.

Con > Dex > Int for a sorc.  HP are key, AC and initiative are nice.  Are you capped at 18?  Also, consider the Magic-Blooded template from Dragon Mag (+2 Cha, -2 Wis, bonus to Spellcraft).

Very nice.

See above.

Is retraining allowed?  You could take Rapid Metamagic early on and then when you are able to persist AS you can retrain it out.

3) Invisible Spell vs Snowcasting???
I personally like Invisible Spell better, but YMMV.

4) Is Residual Magic a good option?
Depends on what you'll be doing.

I personally would axe Empower, Split Ray, and Maximize.  You're not a dedicated blaster, so you can do better.  First and foremost, find out how your DM feels about Reserves of Strength.

Evocation.  Conjuration does Evocation better.

Debuffer is good, BFC is good too.  Damage spells are of limited use unless you're using RoS.  What's the rest of your party like?

Retraining is not allowed. Rapid Metamagic is the feat that troubles me the most. I think I'll skip it after all. There is also arcane fusion that might somehow replace it until arcane spellsurge.

YES! that's a very good suggestion.

I'd like to abuse wings of flurry a little with this build so I think I am keeping evocation. I've seen shadowcraft mage handbooks but I don't want to make such dedicated build.

What's in Races of Stone?
I don't know about the party yet and it is possible I am not learning until the start of the campaing!

I meant Reserves of Strength (as it happens, Shadowcraft Mage is in Races of Stone, but that's not what I meant lol).
