Awesome Teamwork Benefit!
« on: June 18, 2012, 04:44:42 AM »
Shared Magic, a teamwork benefit from Eberron's The Forge of War book, lets the team count as 1 fewer for any spell that affects a specific number of targets.  That means that a cleric could cast Heal, and affect 2 adjacent allies at once!  Or any buff spell that affects 1 target could be cast on 2.  Twice as many persisted buffs to hand out!  (may need Reach Spell to make it work, depending on whether your DM will allow you to persist touch range spells or not)
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

Fixed for you.

That actually is really nice for buffing! You'd get twice the benefit from chaining buffs.

Wow, a teamwork benefit that helps break the action economy?  That is pretty handy.  :plotting

If I remember correctly, it only does this for spells that already have a potential to affect multiple people, so...

It's still lovely, its just not too action economy-breaking.

I do have to say... that one Teamwork Benefit that gives half your Favored Enemy bonus to your team-mates can be extremely potent, especially if you have Wise to Your Ways (free boost to saves? HELL YEAH!) and that one ACF from Dragon that replaces your Animal Companion with a bonus to hit equal to your Favored Enemy bonus... (basically, it is a very potent, but limited in scope, buff to the entire party. I daresay there are some fun things that homebrew can add to this... and isn't there a feat that increases your bonus?)

It's still pretty action economy boosting. Ocular chain a buff and you hit a lot of people with it!

Ocular chain a buff and you already hit a lot of people with it. Teams can only be up to 8 people (and you can only be on one team at once, I believe), so by the time Ocular Chain spells become available, you can already buff everyone in the team anyways.

The greatest benefit for this teamwork benefit would be at lower levels (<= 6 or so), since most multi-target buffs are 1/level anyways. There are a few with more limited or fixed numbers of targets, though, that might be interesting to look at, like Benign Transposition (normally fixed at 2 targets, how do you swap the positions of 3?).

I reread the benefit, just to be sure.  It uses Mass Cure Light Wounds and Teleport as its example spells, both of which are clarified as having a specific number of targets based on level to qualify, but the key is "specific number of targets" with nothing limiting that number to greater than 1.  It only limits the benefit to working when only team members are targets.  I even searched online for errata for the book, but found none.
