If your conjurer doesn't work out look into Beguiler and Factotum.

Today our group met. I ended up playing a normal human conjurer (wizard 5, malconvoker 1) and had a lot of fun. I almost never used direct damage spells and still had a lot of fun. All summoned monsters also seemed rather harmless to the others, so that should work out as well.

Even a tough fighter has to admit that an Ettin is much easier to handle with some glitterdust and spiders. Being a focussed specialist wizard and giving up three schools also helps as ist sounds rather harsh, but actually isn't. I think I will have a lot of fun with this unsuspicious dude.
