Caster level for Sorcerer builds, and Spell Resistance
« on: October 22, 2012, 01:54:10 PM »
Can someone point me to existing threads/guides on bumping up CL for Sorcerers, and for overcoming SR?  My DM has recently started throwing more high SR monsters at us, and as my Radiant Servant is retiring for RP purposes, I'm considering a Sorcerer.

(Low-optimization campaign, with no LA races or templates.)

Thanks!

The easiest way to avoid SR is to use conjuration spells that don't allow it in the first place. Other than that, Assay Spell Resistance is a spell that lowers the enemy spell resistance. CL bumps are pretty universal (ioun stone, feats, etc) and it's generally more trouble than it's worth to try to race SR.

What level?  There is a thread somewhere about boosting caster level in general.

Assay Spell Resistance is a 4th level swift action spell that gives a target a huge penalty to SR.

There is also a standard action 1st level spell that does this, best packed into an Arcane Fusion to get a 4th level spell to stick from a 5th level slot.

Also, there are some awesome spells that have no SR.

Level 13.

I knew about Assay SR, as well as the awesomeness of the Orb spells (with their no SR allowed), but I'm hoping for an item-based option, too; even sorcerers only get so many 4th level spells/day (and feats are too valuable, most of the time).

Hopefully you aren't going straight sorcerer... class features can help you.  Also:

Thanks - good list!

And no, not straight sorcerer.  Haven't picked a flavor yet, but 1+ PRCs are inevitable, with no lost of CL.  (I'm toying with the ever-popular "Master of Rays" style, but getting enough metamagic without Flaws or Incantatrix may be tricky.)

Low price - low return.
Third Eye Penetrate (bonus). mic
Angel Radiance (mat.component), boed
Ring of Arcane Supremacy (reroll, but Arcane Mastery is better, imho), cm iirc

If you are gonna burn a feat on anything, Arcane Mastery is about your best bang/buck buy.  The ability to take 10 on ALL CL checks is pretty clutch.  Its not just overcoming SR, but also Dispel checks and opposed CL checks for various sundry spells and abilities.  My DM let me take a divine version for my counterspeller cleric, and between that, the Inquisition domain, and Divine Defiance, he's kicking some serious spellcaster booty.  I think Incantatrix has a few tricks that are CL dependent, so that might help.
