[3.P] Possible new uses for Profession skill
« on: October 01, 2012, 05:27:31 PM »
The Profession skill is more-or-less an NPC skill, because PCs earn money not through skill checks, but through adventuring (and it's much more lucrative). That's why the skill is considered not worth the points.
But there is more to Profession than just earning some small pocket change.

Check
You can practice your trade and make a decent living, earning about half your Profession check result in gold pieces per week of dedicated work. You know how to use the tools of your trade, how to perform the profession’s daily tasks, how to supervise helpers, and how to handle common problems.

Try Again
Varies. An attempt to use a Profession skill to earn an income cannot be retried. You are stuck with whatever weekly wage your check result brought you. Another check may be made after a week to determine a new income for the next period of time. An attempt to accomplish some specific task can usually be retried.
The underlined sentences indicate that the skill can also be used in some other, not defined in the rules, ways.
That brings us to the point of this thread: What good uses can you think of for the different Profession skills that are relevant and useful to an adventuring party? Assume low to mid level characters, because later almost any skill becomes less and less useful.
I'm trying to make the skill something more than just a useless flavor choice or PrC prerequisite.

Magic is for weaklings.

I use Profession as a wide catch-all skill that can duplicate other skills when it relates to the profession.  Case in point, Profession Sailor: when on a boat or in similar situation, you know how to tie the ropes (dupe Use Rope), determine the condition of the ocean weather (dupe Survival), repair parts of the boat (dupe Craft) and so forth.  Thus, Profession becomes a trade off of being able to do many things, but only in one situation.

It's a bit at the whim to the DM, but it has worked well in my experience.  Especially recently, when I ended up killing a whole army with a well timed Profession Miner check duping what probably would have been Knowledge Engineering.
Mudada.

Well, both Profession (Sailor) and Profession (Miner) have other, rules-defined uses (Sailor for driving naval ships, Miner for digging volume)

Other Profession skills with specific uses in the rules are Profession (Barrister), Profession (Astrologist), Profession (Executioner), and Profession (Siege Engineer). Profession is just a catch-all skill for those things the skill rules don't already cover, a concession to the fact that no skill list can ever be "complete" for every possible character concept. There might be third-party supplements that have additional Profession skills written up, since that's pretty much what it is for: two write up rules for something unusual you want your character to do.

How about Profession: Adventurer, for an in-character justification for all those old-school trap-and-dungeon-handling tricks?

Arguably Profession:Adventurer makes up 99% of the game already.
