I have never heard of such people before. Wait, are you stating that they state that "such people are totally immersed in the fiction of the game universe and always behave in ways that simply enrich the verisimilitude of the moment" because they are rules illiterate, or vice versa?

The topic of the above post is "Players Who Never Learn the Rules."  The OP asks the question, "What do you think of players who NEVER learn even the basics of a system that they play."  The first response is...

That is a treasured and valuable player who's definition of "fun" is fairly close to mine.

Reminds me of artificial grammar learning, 'cept the rules for the game are explicitly accessible.

As much as I am initially repulsed by the concept of such a player, I can relate that we likely do this with other things in life. There's stuff out there that we know about and even use but never learn all of the intricacies of, like atmospheric science. Dry scientific anecdote elided.

Having read that thread, I think there is a distinction being made there between "the rules" and "the game."

What I mean by this is that their understanding of "a player who never learns the rules" seems not to exclude players who devote effort to "learning" the setting, the conventions of RPGs, the optimal methods of PC/NPC interaction and things like that.

From my perspective those things are part and parcel of "the rules" but there seems to be an idea on that thread that "the rules" are inherently mechanical, anti immersive, and bad, thus anything that promotes immersion cannot possibly be rules related.

It reminds me of the "get your government hands off my medicare" meme in that rules and people who like rules have been demonized to the point where it is inconceivable that they might be a positive or necessary force.

The DM in the OP is stupid. Everyone knows that Ninja is way more powerful than anything Non-Ninja. :rolleyes
I'm gonna go with vikings for this one. Rape, plunder and pillage > The mystical ability to be silent. Also big f'ing axes instead of tiny little knives.
Yeah, vikings are basically pirates from the north, and everyone knows that pirates > ninjas.  :smirk
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.
