And so it continues.
The way back to the portal was easy, nothing happened there.
Back in the giant tree they met their new guide, short after their arrival. He led them to the city after they gave him some food.
They would have preferred a portal to lolth web to activate the bow, but he didnt understand them.

And so they returned to the Rattatosk, presenting a lot of meat from the beastlands (which the squirrelmen happily took)
After a good Diplomacy check the volk was willed to share any kind of knowlede. The portal to the land of the giants and the Thread of the ironmaw.

The group was ready to help, especially after they heard how dangerous the beast was. The rattatosk plead them not to go, but they decided to go for it.

The battle was extremely hard. 25AC, 30 SR... +17 on hit atks and some really nasty effects.
At first they fought the tentacles but as it seemed to do no damage they startinig searching for the body (and found it)
One round later the barbarian got swollowed and stayed there for the rest of the fight.
My group was certain, that he can keep fighting from inside, which sounded strange to me, but as I couldnt prove otherwise I just went with it. (The battle looked rather grimm anyhow so they desperatly needed some source of damage.

Finally in a vortex of teath, hits from inside and flamestrikes the tree finally died.

They took it out? Nice! We failed at that. Our scouting trip resulted in a near death and a frantic trying to get away. We decided to wait a few levels before trying again. Never got round to it.

I guess they would have died too if I hadnt allowed the barbarian to keep fighting inside the tree as if nothing happened.
There is no real ruling for "engulfed" but when swalloed at least you are considered grappled and can only fight with a light weapon or less.
And dont forget that they are mostly Lv12 already.

Actually this enabled him to only take the dmg from beeing inside, while hitting with full attacks. ^^° Whitout that it is very questionable if they had been able to kill it without a dead barbarian.

The next session will be the iron wastes.
Snow storms and strong winds will negate that stupid*** airwalk spell. That damn thing negates so many threads, spells, traps and problems.
I will add one encounter in the snow desert to spice it up. Polar bear, cryohydra... XD + the mountain challenge with the giants. It could pretty much happen that they directly go into lolth web from there. But they dont know anything about the drow priestess they are supposed to meet there... Curious what they will do from there.

On their return to the Ratatosk tribe, they found a folk of happiness thanks to the dead tree.
The got the reward, a cloak of invisibility adn 10 nut potions.
After this they made their way to Rime thuras - the land of the giants, saying good buy to the squirrels for now.

On the other side of the portal, they stand in an open snow area, with strong winds (take this you stupid airwalk spell!) In knee deep snow.
A find object spell gives a rough direction and so they start moving through the cold.
The druid protects 3/4 with and attune form spell, the barbarian wears a cold weather outfit and makes a check every hour. (almost no risk)
They move over the plane in the direction of a tree line, some miles away, while coming across a herd of mammuts.

I only implemented them to enrich the scenery, but our barbarian found great use of his handle animal skill. And as I negates the airwalk spell this would be a great challenge for him.
He went through with it and managed to kinda tame the beasts for a ride.
What a scenery, riding 4m tall mammoths through the snow. ^^
They saw some other animals too, but didnt stop for them.

They had to leave the herd ~10 miles further, at the beginning of a glacier, where a narrow way (obviously made) leads in.
The follow the way and find a row of giant spears standing at one point, with skulls pierced on them. In the language of the giants something was written:
Death to the enemys of Ksostchtchie (the king of the giants) - The iron wastes belong the the giants! Which finally gave them the hint that they are not in some nordic frost country but in the abyss. ;)

The way goes on for quite some miles and leads up the glacier to the foot of a mountain. A spiral way leads up to a watchtower/outpost.
As the airwalk spell was still not useable the mage used a dimensiondoor instead to bring the group (but not the druids earth elemental) ~60ft close to the top.
In front of the tower gate was 1 frost giant, on top of the roof another one.

The one below was hit by firespells and melee attacks, taking some big blows. But he managed to land a rather weak sunder attempt on the barbarians hammer. Had he made a better atk he could have shattered it with one hit. ^^ Lucky barbarian.
Meanwhile the giant at the top (I changed him into a caster type) started to cast an max. ice storm on the group for ~35 dmg. He tried to cover the door with a stone wall spell, which the earth druid negated pretty quickly.
Our mage ports into the tower and stands right in front of a 3rd giant, who gets hit by a max scorch. ray and dies instantly to 200+ fire dmg.

Ok now the have to get up the ladder to the roof. The giant at the top closed the door and starts buffing himself for close combat. Rage, prayer... It takes some round for our group to get up and finally our claric (buffed with div. power to giant size) moves up. The readied axe attack hits hard as he didnt have time to put his shield and sword back on. Then its the giants turn and he hits for a full attack. - If the cleric didnt have die hard he would be dead by now so they have to kill him now, which they do... but it was close.

Finally they retrieve the giant demon sword (man what a cheater item XD) and the portal key in the tower, leading to lolth web....
Sadly they have no idea what awaits them or what they are going to look for, but thats not myproblem as a DM. XD

NEXT: They will take the obvious route for sure and simply port to lolth web (Ill have to check if its a 2 way portal or not) From there... no idea.
Ro3 would tell them to look for a certain drow lady who has informations about keys and stuff like that, but they didnt really talk to him...
So Im curious where this will be going.
