Having a disagreement. It is ultimately unimportant who is right, but I just want to ensure I'm applying this correctly for my games.

Quote
Increasing Size
Generally, increasing a monster’s size increases its combat effectiveness. Large creatures gain increased Strength, reach, and other benefits. Apply this modifier if you increase a creature beyond Medium and in conjunction with any other increases.

Be careful, though. Monsters that benefit from a smaller size may actually lose effectiveness because of a size increase. Monsters that don’t benefit from size increases don’t advance in that manner for this reason.

The chart also states:

Quote
Size increased to Large or larger   +1 to CR

I am of the opinion you apply it each time the size increases to larger than Medium.

So, if a monster is advanced from Medium to Huge size, is its CR increased by 2 for those size increases (in addition to increases for added HD)?

I concur -- i.e., that's the way I've always done it.
seems pretty straight forward (well, for D&D anyway)

Agreed.

The person I'm disagreeing with swears that you only apply it once, period.

well, then he fails at understanding context.
in his defense, however, D&D does like to spread its context out all over the place so that you have to read the whole damn book to get the total picture (sometimes multiple books).

I am of the agreement that it applies an increase to CR of +1 each time its size is increased, as many of its statistics are advancing, making it a more capable threat in many aspects than its unaltered brethren; like it says in your quoted text, this isn't always true and might actually be counterproductive for certain creatures, but most things that would like to be larger than your average player character also really benefit from being larger.

I agree it is +1 CR per size increase.  That is how I've always done it and how I've seen it handled by other DM's.

I agree, too.

The bigger the threat, the bigger the CR. A bigger guy, is a bigger threat. Seems plain to me.
