Anyone played numenera yet?
« on: April 02, 2013, 08:44:01 AM »
I know the game itself is not yet released (due out in may) but after the Kickstarter for the video game based on the system started, i wondered if anyone here has manged to sneak a preview of the system. (and don't i wish i had the money to get my own in game obelisk)

On a related note, what sci-fi fantasy system is your personal favorite? Personally i'm hoping this new system will bump Trinity and Aberrant off my personal top favorite for the genre.

I too am curious about Monte's new RPG. The description given on the website sounds less than promising, but Monte has put out good stuff before. There is little I could glean from Monte's corporate-grade shilling-speak.

As for the video game, I'm doubtful. From the looks of it, he's just cashing in on Torment's good name and tacking its surface-level aesthetic on a setting that has absolutely nothing to do with Planescape. It'll have factions and it'll have a ramshackle city, but it won't have the heart of Torment: the examination of belief, morality, and perspective in a world that is literally built around those things. If they advertised it as anything else instead of "inspired by Torment," I would be more excited.

To the question of which sci-fi fantasy system is my favourite: I haven't played many, but I enjoy Rogue Trader quite a lot. Eclipse Phase is also fun, although it is a pain to set up.

Monte Cook isn't making the new Torment game, he was approached by the game company to use his system (with a lot of modifications).

Also in response to the bolded part, IMO it looks like it will exactly have the heart of Torment.  Have you read the developer blogs?  It is meant to be a sort of companion game as opposed to just "inspired by".

Of course none of this actually means anything since the game is still being developed...

One of my worries is that it will wind up like a lot of "story" systems and be too light on mechanical support. For example, the serenity system was nice but often when they story element interacted with a mechanical effect you wins up with contradictory or nonexistent gaps in the flow. Which is fine for oddball stuff, that's what the DM is for, but often it wound up being something pretty critical to the narrative.  (Not the video game the tabletop)
