Help with Batman (Wizard)
« on: April 11, 2013, 02:53:58 PM »
So the forums just ate my previous (large) post. Apologies if this one isn't as complete. I'm looking to complete a level 6 Wizard for a campaign that is going from 1-20, split between dungeoneering and urban adventure/diplomacy. I'm new to D&D in general, and I know some choices were suboptimal. This can be attributed to my newness and to my efforts to build a character similar to a WoW Gnome.

Bojangles Netherspell Arcane Gnome (+2Int+2Con-2Str-2Wis) Level1 Stats after adjustments: 20Int/16Dex/15Con/10Str/10Cha/10Wis

Conj5/MS1
1) trade familiar for Abrupt Jaunt, trade SS for Improved Init, SF:Conj
3) Extend Spell
5) Spont Div.
6) SF: Abj

The intent was Conj5/MS4/IotSV7/Arch4. 3 free feats at 12, 15, 18.

Limited time to learn spells due to time crunch.

Allowed Books. Core + Completes (minus Psionic). ACF's from UA and Dungeonscape. Anything else must be asked for specifically and vetted by DM. (Such as my use of the Arcane Gnome)

Suggestions for changes? Different Classes? Feat selections? Spell Choices? I'd like to avoid retraining if possible, but if you see something that clearly needs to be changed, I can ask. I understand now that I probably tried to do too much, (Took Conj for AJ, but still wanted IotSV, and had the beginnings of attempting extensive Persistent Spell Metamagic use.)

How will you attempt extensive persistent spell use?  I don't see anything in the build that allows you to reduce metamagic costs.

If you do want to abuse Persistent Spell, consider Incantatrix (the 3.5 version.)  The free metamagic uses you can get are extremely powerful.  Also, being a gnome qualifies you for shadowcraft mage, which is a very very good class.

That comment of mine was more related to my attempt at "trying to do too much." I realize that with only 3 open feat slots I'm not likely to get much Persistent Spell abuse running. It was just something I was trying to do back when I was first making the build. I was simply explaining why "Extend Spell" was taken at level 3.

I can't get Incantatrix. It's not in the allowed books, and I certainly have asked the DM about it before. It was a solid "no". I assume without it that I'm best off not trying for anything of that sort, which is why I'm asking the boards what I should do instead. Preferably most suggestions would work within the material mentioned.

Well...

If your DM is allowing 3.0 material and you are going to be casting ray spells...

(click to show/hide)

Oh, and if you can sucker your DM into allowing you to load a rod of many wands into that deathwand slot... 3 scorching ray wands at 12th level is 12 rays. Each ray splits into 12 more rays. Each ray that hits continues on through for an additional 1d6 damage to the first target and a chance to injure the second, and third, and fourth... With a little luck, lets say half the rays continue on to hit the targets behind... half again... oh, not unreasonable to expect lets say 20 successful strikes?  at 5d6+2 damage a ray... Ooo! Add Eager WSA! You'll get +2 damage per ray in the surprise round!  22.5 avg damage a ray... 442 points of damage on average. Not bad for a crossbow, eh?

But run it by your DM first. There are a number of big IFs that need to approved first. Still, kinda reminds me of the end of Raiders of the lost ark.

If you have questions about 3.5 D&D, you might want to look at the:
