Pathfinder - Ranged build - Help required
« on: May 17, 2013, 11:00:08 AM »
Hey all,

Looking to get some assistance with the following. We have a newly started campaign with 8 payers. Some which are more experienced, some which are completely new to the game.
My goal originally was to attempt and build a summoner, but seeing as we already have 8 bodies running around (not including any familiars or our druids companion), I figured perhaps not the best idea to throw more meatshields in there.
So instead I decided to try and either build a supporting ranged build, or more towards high damage ranged build.
We have an archer and a rogue who focusses on throwing weapons, and a sorc as well.

We have access to anything on http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ when it comes to feats/spells/classes etc.

What I had been looking for to best help the party was perhaps a battlefield control wizard. However, I really enjoy killing things or fully disabling enemies. Which is why I turn to you!
I was hoping to get some insight in perhaps building a save or die/lose build, or no saves at all. Focussing mostly on battlefield control spells (sleep, color spray, glitter dust etc at lower levels) With some very effective spells for taking out enemies as well (thinking enervation or ray options).
I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to building this and have been searching left and right only to get more confused as to what route to take to try and get this build effectively.

We had to roll for stats and since most of us rolled relatively horribly, our DM decided to give us a +2 extra in any stat we wanted. This resulted in my wizard have 22  INT to start with. I thought the extra +6 would help for any save targeting build.

I would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered or even just links to similar builds.

My build is probably too optimized as it has a lot of things that many DM's wont do. I am predominantly a ray user. Unfortunately on my build vs. yours, all books are allowed: 3.0, 3.5, pathfinder, and 3rd party books. But you can get some ideas.

My weapon is a sorcerer's hand which allows you to apply the numerical enchantment bonus to the attack roll of your rays. Ranged touch attack ftw! Precision is required for Splitting which doubles the ray in mid flight, both rays must hit the same target but get separate attack rolls. (Arms and Equipment Guide p. 117, definitely not pathfinder but you may be able to recraft it)

Many of my spells (in the prayerbook) are of the buff/debuff variety. With pathfinder's version of reach, and with touch spell metamagic from pathfinder's complete advanced feats you can make ranged buffs and debuffs of near anything. (Though if you could get D&D 3.5's version of reach then those spells become rays.  :love )

At the very least it'll help you with ideas on where to go. :love

Edit: Rays are darned good if you wanna avoid critters using evasion to get outta getting hit. Just gotta beat their touch AC... Touch Mastery from Complete Advanced Feats would help with that, as it uses your INT modifier rather than your STR modifier for your touch attacks (melee and ranged)

Thanks a ton for the reply Shareeth!

Will have to play around with some of the suggestions yo have posted.
You are correct that some of the options in your build would not work due to book restrictions, but there's definitely some info that I can use.
One of the ideas I had been playing with was to grab Spellslinger to go with the ray build. Would you advise against this or would it be a valid option?

ray is pretty good, and using the other forms given with that archetype. as touch ac is easier to hit than saves, usually.
