Sessions via Skype or Google Hangout
« on: May 20, 2013, 12:17:33 PM »
Hello!,

So, it has been awhile since my last visit, but I've hit another bump in the road. I'm facing the potential of my small gaming group of about 4 people being split into two groups of 2 people roughly an hour and a half apart by car. Because of this we are looking into doing sessions via Skype or Google Hangout, but this leaves the problem of how to have a viewable editable map that everyone can see and use. I suppose a Google docs spreadsheet would work if you resize the cells but does anyone have any experience in this or better suggestions?

MapTool is possibly the most established application for this. Its learning curve can be steep, but it's a charm if you get it to work for everyone. I've seen connection or update issues mess with things before, though.

Roll20 is a newer, web-based application that I personally have no experience with, but I've heard good things about it.

+1 for MapTool.  I ran a weekly game for over a year using it and had few problems(mostly just one player having connection issues).
The DM giveth and the rogue taketh away.
I have a 5 in Charisma and Diplomacy is a cross-class skill.  Hopefully I don't piss off too many people.

Thirding Maptool, it's extremely good for your purposes, especially if you preload it with whatever content you want to use. Might have some teething problems until it manages to synchronize your additional graphics assets with your players though.
Everything is edible. Just that there are things only edible once per lifetime.
It's a god-eat-god world.

And to the mercies of a moment leaves; The vast concerns of an eternal scene.

Both of them sound great and Roll20 looks amazing once you learn how to do it. Thanks for the help guys. I'll be sure to look into Maptool some more
