Urban Savant Overrated?
« on: May 25, 2013, 04:59:22 AM »
Urban Savant:
http://dndtools.eu/classes/urban-savant/

I've seen a few threads say it is super uber because knowledge is power (I agree).

However, it's abilities seem to only apply to "aberrations, animals, humanoids, monstrous humanoids, oozes, and vermin".

Which, while very nice, is also not very consistent ...

Thoughts?

These are quite some types which still makes it a very useful ability, especially cnsidering the fact that it is a city oriented class. In urban areas, you are not very likely to meet different creatures. It is often mentioned as a way to get casting in light armor with no ASF for one level dip that doesn't even lose caster level. If you can actually replace bardic knowledge requirement by ranks in Knowledge (history), than all you need to do is get the Favoured feat. "or similar organisation" is a broad term and I am sure one can find an organisation with so useful benefits that taking the feat is worth it. Overally, a full caster class with a nice ability, light armor casting and relatively easy requirements is pretty uber to me. Maybe it is not Incantatrix or Dweomerkeeper uber but it definitely is a solid choice.

The 6 skill points per level is also quite good. So it's a nice PrC, but I wouldn't call it "uber". Incantatrix sets the bar pretty high for that. :P
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

It is an uber prestige class if you ignore the OMG prestige classes such as incantatrix, seven fold veil, shadowcraft mage, rainbow snake (if you assume full casting), dweomerkeeper, etc.

I love this argument :)

This is an amazing class if you ignore all other classes that are better :)

But all in all, its a very decent PrC.

Urban Savvy:

"An urban savant is an expert on the local community."
Dude lives at Sigil, soo ...
"The DM can modify this list as needed, replacing any creature type here with any other type appropriate to the campaign, or adding new ones."
DM fiat but part of the class ability.

Urban Empathy:

"At the DM's discretion, this ability could work on certain aberrations as well, though most are too violent and unpredictable for such tactics." "If the DM opts to allow use of this ability on aberrations,"
DM Fiat but part of the class ability.

Worst case scenario, Baleful Polymorph into X.

One campaign type that Urban Savant is awesome at ... is the ever-popular Underdark/Drow campaign. All those creature types are in significant abundance in said environment.
