Warlock/Berserker
« on: June 06, 2013, 06:57:58 AM »
Hi guys!

What do you think about this build:
Don't mind the race, it is just for flavor.

Name   Eldritch Berserker
Race   Drow
build: barbarian1/fighter2/warlock6/Frenzied Berserker5/fighter4

Abilities(buy 25):   STR16   DEX6+2   CON17-2   INT8+2   WIS6     CHAR14+2
Then all points to CON

Feats   lvl1   lvl3   6   9   12   15   18
lvl
1- destructive rage
2- BONUS-power attack
3- intimidating rage
3- BONUS- endurance
6- cleave
9- steadfast determination
12- improved bullrush
15- shock trooper
15-BONUS- reckless rage
17-BONUS- diving charge
18- leap attack

Invocations
dark ones' own luck
devil's sight
see the unseen
fell flight

Notes: high saves to get out of frenzy, flight, charger (obviously).

2 specific questions then feel free to had remarks:
1/ can I combine flight and leap attack? (like flying above obstacles, landing just before the enemy and immediately jumping for the kill)
2/ Any ways to survive after my deathless frenzy runs off?

Is there an end goal of making this character other than a raging flying charger? With so many levels of Warlock you may want to consider taking the Eldritch Glaive Invocation.

The goal is to find interesting ways to use the warlock class.
Also the build allows to control the Frenzy and avoid destroying my fellow adventurers once I run out of enemies.

I could not use the eldritch glaive while frenzied/raging.

Jumping is part of your move action so I would think you could fly land jump and attack.
 Quoted from the SRD "Action
None. A Jump check is included in your movement, so it is part of a move action. If you run out of movement mid-jump, your next action (either on this turn or, if necessary, on your next turn) must be a move action to complete the jump. "  I remember an item(a torc maybe) from somewhere that allows for spell-casting while enraged.

Warlock & ECL>10? Needs more Hellfire Warlock. If you were a real spellcaster I'd suggest Rage Mage, but not so much huh?

You need to pick up Shock Trooper at the 6th level rather than delaying it until the 15th, also consider adding the Dragonborn Template for x2 damage and inherent wings. You'll lose the (lame) Drow traits, but you still get to keep all the Drow flavor (I'm a dark elf that Tiamat turned into a dragon!) A ticked off magical dragon sounds awesome. And if you're dipping fighter for those Bonus Feats, I'd consider Monk2/Warblade 2 over it. Over Whelming Attack Monk gives Power Attack, Improved Bullrush, Evasion, and Invisibility. Capping your build off with Warblade can mean up to 5th level Maneuvers, including the Save Reroll Boost.

Something like Overwhelming Attack Monk 2 / Warlock 3 / Lion Totem Wolf Totem Whirling Frenzy Barbarian 2 / Warlock +2 / Warblade 1 / Hellfire Warlock 3 / Frenzy Berserker 6 / Warblade +1 work?
Dragon Mag's Eldritch Claws would be quite helpful. As would a Mantle of Rage (+1 rage/day) & a +1 Furious Armor Spikes (rage to greater rage) it the DM allows them to work with Whirling Frenzy.

Ok so I have to choose between flying and jumping... not a big issue. Thanks for the confirmation.

Warlock & ECL>10? Needs more Hellfire Warlock.

As I said, invocations and rage/frenzy are not compatible + I don't think I would allow it on a charger build if I was DM.
Let's try to keep it not too overpowered, I could also go with lion totem and a spiked chain to really destroy everything but I like more the idea of 1 round 1 hit 1 dead.
But I agree that it would be awesome ! Maybe if we could find that object that JoshM mentioned allowing spellcasting during rage and then it would become RAW...

You need to pick up Shock Trooper at the 6th level rather than delaying it until the 15th

I'm not sure... this would delay deathless frenzy and I would like to prioritize the control over my frenzy to avoid destroying the party.

I am not familiar with ToB and UA but I love the Monk Idea!!!

I try to keep it as a 2 base classes 2 prestige classes max, making an exception for the 1lvl barb dip.
This means we forget the warblade and continue either advancing one of the classes or finding a nice PrC.
I couldn't find a nice PrC without too many prereq. feats but maybe you guys have something?
So it seems that the best is to continue advancing monk... getting me +1AC, evasion, still mind, 30ft. slowfall, improved overrun and +20ft speed.
The speed is nice, especially when flying but is it worth losing 2 feats? + If I take monk I have to be lawful evil.
I like it though so will keep both options and continue looking for another PrC.

Unfortunately monk is any lawful and barbarian/Frenzied berserker is any non-lawful...

I would really like to get rid of this barbarian lvl but could not find another way to get the rage ability... maybe someone can come up with something?

Thanks for the advices!

Mmmh... lvl3 is not so early... I get it at lvl2 with fighter + another free feat + it would be problematic as the build is only barb1...
And climb speed instead of speed... I fly.

Dragonborn doesn't work w warlock
Huh? Why do you think that?

@Rain, the quote would have been pretty broken so I so skipped it.
*Hellfire Warlock (& eldritch claws) is for when you're not charging, plus hellfire gives retaliation when hit and a nice ranged alternative when needed.
*One hit KOs are nice, missing your opponent because they are under the effects of Blur isn't. Additional Attacks = always good. Likewise, the actual mechanical of combat have nothing to do with you're attacks per round, you think your Barbarian slashes with his sword once every six seconds? Fluff is fluff, mechanics is mechanics. Call it a single devastating hit if you like.
*I've never heard of the item. Dragon Mag has a Feat that allows Quickened Spells while Raged, other than that just Rage Mage. Maybe you can talk your DM into altering the requirements to be more Warlock friendly.
*Trident of Serenity (FR:RoF) costs a hair over 5,000gp, it totally and savelessly negates both Rage and Frenzy within 15ft of it. Hand it to a party member and the problem is beyond solved.
*On Monk/Barbarian, you know. There is no Monk/Barb multiclass Feat or option in WotC 3.5 is there? My bad. You'd need something like Chaotic Monk from Dragon Mag.
*Mantle of Rage grants 1/day Rage for 4k. Under Item Creation Guidelines, you could go with merging it with it's self or 22k buys 4/day. May not fly since those guidelines rarely hold up well so instead you might be better off with an alternative. Battlewine for instance gives +4 alchemical to Str/Con and -2 AC for one minute before it fatigues you.

I don't want to use dragon mags, and I don't have them anyway.

Full round attacks can be nice to add if I feel the build is too weak but let's keep it as is for now and if we add the eldritch glaive and hellfire warlock on top of that I still agree that it is awesome but I still think that it is really cheesy.. will keep the option!

Thanks for pointing me to UA, I found the druidic avenger there which replaces nicely the barbarian level!
I m now thinking about replacing the 4 last fighter levels with aspect druid.... what do you think?

Dragonborn doesn't work w warlock
Huh? Why do you think that?

Dragonborn, as written, requires non-evil.  It'd still work with warlock of course, if said warlock was Chaotic Good or Chaotic Neutral.

However, as you pointed out Dragonborn is very easy to refluff for Tiamat instead of Bahamut.  So easy, in fact, that it doesn't even require any mechanical changes beyond alignment switching to "any evil" or even "any non-good."

Rain, what alignment is your character?  Is it possible to use the Savage Progression for Drow?  Also note that in UA, you can buy off the Drow's LA.  See page 18, or there's the SRD if you want.

I'm not sure on Druid ACF combos, if if you have less than five levels, trade that Wildshape you'll never get away :)

And ninja'ed on Dragonborn.

Rain, if you want to see some ACFs, here's the thread with most, if not all, of the regularly-published ACFs along with a few odd ones like the Avenger variant of Assassin.

Ahh Dragon 310, the original source of the UA's Variants. Also home to one of the coolest Monk options ever. Trade the Bonus Feats for Smite Evil & Turn Undead, then using Smite to Song you can pick up Inspire Courage as well. You're a Monk which is pretty much Fighter meets Rogue, plus Paladin plus Bard. You're like halfway where to having a Fumbles character. Just need a little Chameleon to help out.
