How to acquire burrow through rock and leave passage?
« on: June 13, 2013, 03:13:45 PM »
i need to be able to:

A) burrow through rock explicitly (so just getting a burrow movement is not enough - see MM for why)

and

B) be able to leave a passage.

Ways and means and references, please.

Polymorph into a Thoqqua (MM 1).  The SRD doesn't mention it, but Thoqquas leave behind a small usable tunnel and can burrow through rock.  Thoqqua also appears on the Summon Nature's Ally 3 list.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

that is one solution that meets my given criteria, and i did see in the mm1 the leaving passage clause. thank you.

sadly, i forgot to mention that this character does not have access to shapechanging or spells (and only very low level powers) of any sort, and needs to be able to pull it off themselves, so no companions either. my apologies.

Although it is flirting with having spellcasting, for completeness one should mention Fiendish Heritage + Fiendish Legacy (both from Comp Mage).  Fiendish Legacy allows you to use Summon Monster 5 once per day.  Thus you could summon a few Thoqqua.

It also lets you teleport once per day, so it's not too terrible.

I only saw Thoqqua on SNA, not SM :(

Could you buy a psychoactive skin of the proteus to become one?  Or UMD a wand?

Worst comes to worst, could you just smash though?  Stone has hardness 8 and 15 hp/inch, so depending on how thick it is you might just be able to power through it.

well, smashing through is kinda what i'm after. it's just that this character is not the super high-str type necessary for break dc method, and the sheer amount of damage necessary to pulverize stone is a bit daunting. i was hoping to refluff burrowing as "punching through rock walls and pillars and doors", etc., thereby bypassing the whole hp & hd part, but i need a way to get burrowing that works with stone.

A team of dwarven miners.

Alternatively Mountain Hammer.
Magic is for weaklings.

A team of dwarven miners.

would work, but does not meet criteria.

Alternatively Mountain Hammer.

ignores dr/hd, but does insufficient damage to break stone walls or pillars.

thanks, though.

... hit more than one time?

except that becomes a bit difficult without very specific optimization choices due to mountain hammer requiring a standard action and the bonus damage not affecting any subsequent extra hits.

however, taking your basic concept...

if i go (for example) psionic monk, i can expend focus as a free action, and ignore hd/dr for a single blow (3) or for the entire flurry (8). plus i can tack on mongoose maneuvers and snap kick for extra hits towards the end.

i could also go decisive strike for double damage, but i need to calculate whether that combined with mongoose and snap kick would total more damage than a full flurry plus mongoose and snap kick.

and i could always throw in iajutsu focus via the frcs cosmopolitan feat.

i'd really like to get the 5' to 10' stonebreaking all within one round, if possible. hence my considering burrow refluffed as "martial breaking technique" as an OTB approach.
