Throwing Rocks
« on: June 15, 2013, 01:22:50 PM »
I feel like a god damn idiot.

I can't find any rules on picking up a rock and throwing it at someone. I mean, specifically. I can generalize something off the top of my head, but how much damage does a sling bullet do if I just throw it at someone?

The reason it's come up is, I'm getting back to my base weapon handbook and I've realized I skipped over all the grenade-like weapons. Well, some of these grenade-like weapons could be thrown AT someone. Then I realized, well, if I'm throwing a sparkstone and I hit someone, and I got a strength of 50, shouldn't I do +20 damage?

Are there any Damage: 0 weapons out there? I mean, like it ONLY does bonus damage, but has no damage in and of itself?

Book and/or page numbers welcome

Er... if you make a sling / what-have-you small enough, it's damage drops to - from size decreases? Only thing I can think of. Improvised Thrown Weapon, maybe?

You could probably make do with the improvised weapon rules in Complete Warrior.  Pages 158 and 159.  10 sling bullets are 5 pounds, so half a pound each, which lines up with 1d3 damage on the chart in CW.  And as a thrown weapon it would indeed add strength to damage.

With such a large Str mod, I hope your character has Brutal Throw?

Regarding the "throwing rocks" part:
For small rocks, i think you can use the shuriken as a reference, dealing the same amount of damage and using the same range increment (1d3 for a medium character, 10ft.). This also goes in line with the rules in CW.
I may be wrong, but i think i read about an exotic weapon called "halfling skiprock", or something like that... Can't remember where, or it's stats, but i'll look for it...

For bigger rocks, you can always look for the entry on "Rock Throwing" in the giants.

As for the 0 dmg weapons... I don't think you could apply damage to them. Examples: If i throw a thunderstone, the stone is designed to vaporize on impact, so it will. If you throw a (non-frozen) pea or a cheeto (yes, the snack) at someone, it would certainly take a lot of power for it to cause any kind of damage. Either it's mass is simply not enough on impact, or it's energy will disperse as it flies through the air.

Depending on your interpretation of "0 damage", there are the ones that deal non-lethal damage, but you know about those already :tongue
