The Small Rants Thread, Continued...
« on: November 12, 2011, 07:48:53 PM »
So, someone found me on Facebook ... and it was an Ex-Girlfriend.  One that I did not part on amiable terms with (hell, I barely have an idea of what the hell happened).

So now I've got this little internal struggle going on between my overwhelming curiosity to know why she acted like such a bitch towards me, and another very strong, logic-based impulse to just stay the hell away.  I've got nothing to gain from the cultivation of any kind of relationship with her.

Oh, and this all goes on with the usual dramas of life playing out already: money, family, midterm exams...

Stay away.  Run, if necessary.  If she found you, she was looking for you.  If she was looking for you, and she was that much of an incomprehensible bitch the last time around...well, I can't see many ways for that to go well.
“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”

Finding someone on Facebook isn't much of an effort. Heck, it could be one of the friend suggestions FB keeps pushing.

I had to tell FB that I didn't know her to get it to stop recommending it, yes.  We both went to the same university, so I assume that's why Facebook keeps making the suggestion.

It's amazing how it spies people like that. I just read from the blog of some old cracker (the guy who revealed Facebook was going through our page history even if you logged out) that he made an experiment with Facebook. He created a bunch of fake accounts, logging into to those to do some research. In no time FB started making friend suggestions between those fake accounts without them ever having any direct or indirect contact apart from being used from the same IP.

I have my own small rant.

I really really hate it when you do a bunch of work on something (say, the post for a homebrew base class) and then reload the page, losing everything you've done.

It's really REALLY annoying.

What browser do you use? There's a Firefox addon that automatically caches your textarea. Chrome probably has one, too.

I use Chrome.  If I back/forward, it stays, but if I reload it goes away... I should investigate said extension.

I think that's typical behavior. If I lose it, I can usually salvage it by clicking back. Also, if it seems to be taking abnormally long to post, I have a tendency to quickly copy the text to the clipboard to save me the trouble later.

I originally made it a habit on MW, which used to have a habit of logging me out when I took too long to post, and would then of course nuke that hard-written awesome IC post.

Mark Zuckerberg once said that he doesn't believe in the concept of privacy, and sold personal information of people's Facebook accounts to private corporations.

One of the main reasons I don't use the site.

To be honest, fuck if I care. If you use the internet for email purposes, going through forums or whatever, the corporations are going to get what they want of you. Going Facebook just makes it incrementially easier for them and someone makes money out of that.

The difference between...

P(t) = P0e0.06t

and

P(t) = P0etln1.06

Only a Businessman would come up with something so needlessly complicated. :banghead

Yes, there should be a "rounding errors" support group.

Well, it depends a lot on what it's being used for and what values of t are expected. The deviation starts getting pretty significant for t>100 or so (exp(0.06*100)=403 vs. exp[ln(1.06)*100]=339, relative error ~19%). But again, I've no idea what it's for, so it's hard to tell.
