My friends in real life make me lose it in political discussion.  They believe that socialist, nazi, communist, democrat, etc all mean the exact same thing and are the exact same philosophy.   :banghead

Heh, I feel your pain.  An actual quote that I saw on my Facebook a couple days ago:

"No, communism and socialism are the same thing - if you're too retarded to see that, then I'm done talking here"

Wow.

Just wow.

2 seconds of research (almost literally for faster connections) would make them lose that ignorance.

I hate buying food in Tampa, but especially at a convention center.

$2.75 for a can of Coke, $7.25 for some chicken tenders, and they can't even afford ketchup packets.

I've been grading practical tests on Introduction to Computing(you know where they just do microsoft office). I've lost faith in humanity when a third of the class seems likely to fail on tests that involve formatting text, using excel formulas, shading boxes, borders....

Please, my friends are already joking about me taking over the world in disgust.

Don't help me make that an actual goal.

Well, I know enough that I wouldn't end up actually being in charge; I need help setting up an enlightened government.

But the first thing I would do, before relinquishing power: re-education camps that teach people that being an intelligent, well-rounded individual is a worthy goal.

Because that doesn't seem to have penetrated.

Here's a fun little fact: School isn't about learning, it's about effort and how well you fit into society's expectations of you (that is to say, how corporations and government officials think you should fit in).

Grades are meaningless as far as actual intellect goes.

I figured that out years ago, which makes school frustrating, to say the least.

True as far as grades go - the learning you do on your own is invaluable though.  You can really get your career off to a great start through the contacts you make and the research you do.  My advice is to make friends with professors that you get along with and see if they want help on whatever they're working on.  Even if you don't get paid or get an official position, you get contacts, and exposure to what real research and learning is all about.  And if you get lucky, a credit on a paper, book or project is a huge boost to your professional reputation.

I worked in retail for a bit, so I've seen plenty of stupid shit.

For instance, a lady got butter first thing upon coming into the store.  After an hour of going through the isles with it in her cart, she complains it's soft.  NO SHIT SHERLOCK!

In a recent 300 level (3rd year of college for those elsewhere in the world) English class, the professor was forced to give reminders on the following after grading the essays:

1. Fragments bad.
2. Run-on sentences are bad they make your paper hard to read you should not use them.
3. We're going to have a 20 minute refresher course on dangling participles, because folks are structuring sentences such that the direct object is the thing taking action.

I would have walked out of that class without a second thought.  If people are that shitty, call up a study group, or send them to tutoring - if I wanted to waste my time and money watching other people learn basic english, I could go take my 100 level courses again.

Gah - lots of bad memories of that happening back in undergrad.  I quickly learned to take even basic courses with professors with tenure - they don't give a fuck about people failing.
The main lecturer is going to have to write a report on the abysmal passing rate in fact. Also rampant cheating, but thankfully the afflicted students fall in the 1/3 who're failing anyway.
