If this were normal for me, I wouldn't be too worried. I don't really like to sleep that much, and I've always envied D&D elves for their ability to trance. But I'm worried because less REM sleep means impaired higher cognitive functions and less concentration, and that leads to mistakes at work.
ehm... no. there are a lot of studies which say that 6 hours of sleep is enough. going over 9 hours can actually be bad for you. so don't worry.

I could really use a second, third or even fourth opinion on that.

wikipedia says:

A University of California, San Diego psychiatry study of more than one million adults found that people who live the longest self-report sleeping for six to seven hours each night.[24] Another study of sleep duration and mortality risk in women showed similar results.[25] Other studies show that "sleeping more than 7 to 8 hours per day has been consistently associated with increased mortality," though this study suggests the cause is probably other factors such as depression and socioeconomic status, which would correlate statistically.[26] It has been suggested that the correlation between lower sleep hours and reduced morbidity only occurs with those who wake after less sleep naturally, rather than those who use an alarm.

Fair enough. I will still conduct some research on that though.

Okay, my body is starting to scare me again.

For the past few weeks, my metabolism has been clearly out of whack. I've been sleeping significantly less (I used to average 8-9 hours. Now I average 6-7. I sometimes try to force myself to sleep more, because otherwise I'd have slept 5), and I've been waking up at times that are too freaking precise (like literally 30 seconds before my alarm clock rings). I've been eating a lot more (or more accurately, getting hungry a lot more often) but without increasing in weight. My body has been craving sugar like crazy, like every other hour of the day. My concentration hasn't necessarily improved, but the change in sleep SHOULD have affected it by now.

Just so you know, waking up 30 seconds before your alarm goes off is perfectly normal when you're well rested and energetic / highly anticipating the morning. 6-7 hours isn't bad, especially if you're waking up perfectly on schedule, and the amount of sleep you need changes as you get older.

Sugar and hunger could be a variety of things I'm sure but the simplest explanation for all this would probably be becoming more active in some way that doesn't build muscle. Or could just be an increased metabolism yeah, that's not a horrible thing.

I just wish I knew the cause so that it doesn't freak me out as much. It could be related to a medication I've had to take recently (my right knee has been giving me pain for a while now. Apparently, being made of iron doesn't mean I can't wear myself out)...

Ignore the above.

Studies Zug may be talking about is the one that noticed people with depression and sickness tend to sleep more. Not understanding the difference between a symptom and a cause the ruled inconclusively on illogical fallacies to create one of the biggest lies being told (without citation) around the Internet. Hilariously it really makes fun of the several other studies that state kids need to sleep longer than adults as if to say kids should die.

Sleep requirements are based on the individual them selves. The duration of sleep doesn't matter number wise. If you are awake and refreshed for the day then currently that duration is what you need, but it could very well change in the next 24 hours. This is my opinion though, if you want a citation have literately the first hit on google for how long should I sleep?, and even it deputes the >9 YOU DIE lie.

I was, incidentally, at the doctor today. He mentioned that for someone with my lifestyle, 7-8 hours is probably a good bet; although 6 hours wouldn't exactly kill me. I should be okay, though.

Like I said, it's more because I don't know what's causing it and the fact it's not a normal thing for me that I'm worried. Not knowing can cause anxiety, and that very anxiety can alter my metabolism further, so it becomes a vicious cycle. My body feels perfectly fine for the most part - my heartrate is monitored often, as I exercise frequently -, it's just that if this is supposed to be the result of something I'm doing right, I'd like to know WHAT I'm doing right so I can keep doing it.

EDIT: And yes, I realize how weird it seems to complain about feeling better than normal!

Word of advice: On rare occasions, it is best to not understand what happens with your own body. Today, Kuro, your sleep cycle is one of those occasions.

My guess. Ever heard of runner's high? Exercise had flooded your body with endorphins, those pleasure givers made you stop worrying and reflect on you getting off the couch and being healthy so now you're super pleased with your self bringing in the mental condition. Self confidence is restored, you are successfully winning at life! And the best part? You're more likely to land a date and sex afterwards right now. Enjoy that thought for a moment and go make it happen. Also you should record it, and probably post it online... Wait does that sound gay?

That'd make sense if I hadn't actually been forced to cut back on the exercise, on account of my knee giving me trouble. So it could be the inverse, really: my body is super pissed because the regular exercise it's getting is not at the same pace it used to be.

So my family's dog of 18 years had to be put down today because of a cavalcade of medical issues plagueing her for the past five months.

This is the first time I have cried in twelve years.

And tonight I will drink a thousand beers in remembrance.

“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”
