Maybe you should stop stalking Sunic...
Who said I do? He's the one trolling places I frequent. I'm more then happy if he's not on Minmaxboards, MW and GitP.

There are people here who declare themselves gay. What's wrong with clarifying that I'm not?

I hate people who think that renewing copyright is greedy. Disney is based entirely around their intellectual property. Authors may draw inspiration from other works, but without the security of copyright, why would anyone publish? I would go absolutely apeshit if I found out someone stole one of my story ideas. Just because the Tolkien estate won't let Lord of the Rings enter the public domain does not mean they are money-grubbing whores!

That's true, and I wouldn't want to take that away from people.  However, there's the greedy side that does come through.  If you aren't putting out new material and just re-releasing old works charging an arm and a leg calling them "classic" disney, that's just not right.  They're getting around these laws by changing them slightly and re-releasing them, punishing those who do the same, and actually stealing other things, changing the colors/animation style, and then yelling about others doing the same.  It's about hypocracy.  And then there's the Fair Use clause allowing others to take from your work as reference, or parodies, or something like that.  Eliminating that (claiming that it's protecting copywrite) hinders cultural progress.  It inhibits intellect.  It robs us the consumer of more properties that might end up being better and cheaper than existing ones.....oh wait.....

See, copywrite's great and all, but much like every other law and business, those with money want to take advantage of it, and if they can't, change it until they can.

I'll give that half an amen. The amount of pull those guys have on law is actually fairly limited - strong, but limited. Thankfully, the law system is NOT in the hands of money-grubbers yet.

Of course, I'm biased in that I believe that cultural distribution should be a given right like freedom of expression or trolling Twilight fans. (Which means it should be used responsibly, as with any goddamn right.)

It's worth noting that one of my professors is an expert on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and has, historically, been in correspondence with Christopher Tolkien.

Said professor is...somewhat disapproving of the current management of the Tolkien estate.  More than once, he has segued from a discussion of C. Tolkien into a discussion of the habits of dragons.  (For those who don't know, they accumulate a lot of gold and, instead of sharing it with the world, sit on it.)
“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”

Tolkien stole from some guy.  Everyone stole from Tolkien.  I don't see what the big deal is about, The Lord of the Rings trilogy was pretty mediocre.  Disney stole most of it's old stuff, too, although the more modern stuff is, indeed, original.  They should be allowed to keep copyrights to whatever original stuff they do.

Let's start with how Hollywood got its start.  Edison helped create the Motion Picture Patents Company and because it required a bunch of licensing and crap, many filmmakers moved to Hollywood to get away from them.

Fast forward to today and Hollywood is the one bitching about licenses.  Ironic.

Let's add another layer on to the Circle of Douchebaggery: Edison stole most of his ideas from other inventors and ruined them with shady business practices that he then hated when used on him...by Hollywood.

Considering a good 90% of this forum is about D&D i doubt you will come across anyone who doesn't have a clear idea on the habits of dragons...

Ironically, the old stuff was better than what they put out nowadays.

Or perhaps predictably.

Earlier authors did not seem to mind publishing their works, even without copyright extending 70 years past their death. At some point, copyright goes from protecting ideas to hindering fair use. I do not see how a copyright term of 28 years, with the option to renew for another 28 years past that was too little.

Facetious parenthetical is facetious.

Technically Lord of the Rings is divided into six books.  Those are combined into three volumes of two books each.  Didn't you notice the names of the movies?

i do know that. i just wanted to point out that the lord of the rings is NOT a trilogy but a single novel, even if it was published in several books. just read the introduction by the man himself.
