Why are all the really awesome racial feats Aboleth only?
« on: July 08, 2013, 10:00:18 AM »
Seriously, why?

Look at Aboleth Glyph.

It's essentially "crafting spell traps, but without dealing with really poorly written rules!"

Also, has anyone else read the Runes of Celedon chapter in Dragon Magazine?

Yeah.
"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those that defy it."

"Now that everyone's so happy, this is probably a good time to tell you I ate your parents."

Tippyverse, here we come!  Who would've guessed that the Aboleth would get there first?

In retrospect, that's obvious.  They predate all other civilizations by aeons.  I can only presume a trap to end all traps ended their primordial civilization.  Summon sponge or hankie or something similarly disrupting.

That's weird, 'cause the Aboleths oughta be able to do something different.

Keldar have you ever read ripvanwomer's d&d timeline?

The "deep" time of D&D before the current mulitverse:
le'Shays
Atropus (prime mover)
Erebus
Far Realms
Perpendicular *Place* of Pandorym

* The leshays destroy the previous multiverse [Epic Level Handbook, 202].
* The present multiverse begins, created by the so-called Old Ones. [DM's Guide to Immortals, page 3]
* The Old Ones create draedens and the first dragons [Dragon #158, page 14]
* The Elder Evils create the aboleths [Lords of Madness, page 15]
* The Old Ones create a Barrier around the multiverse and withdraw beyond it, interacting with their creation only through their minions, the umbral blots and spectral hounds. Others say the umbral blots destroy their creators [DM's Guide to Immortals, pages 3, 4, and 50 - see also the Epic Level Handbook, page 224]
* The first gods find the multiverse without order and without purpose, and they make the achievements of these things their highest goal. [ibid]
* The draedens become resentful of the gods, and the two forces go to war. After long strife and negotiations, the draedens agree to peace, planning to outlast their enemies, waiting for the gods to destroy themselves, leaving the multiverse to them again.[DM's Guide to Immortals, page 39]

Aboleth fluff says they predate the current universe though, doesn't it?

At least it isn't the Illithid fluff; their civilization, technically, has a negative age (OK, so not really, but it is fun to look at it that way.)

idk I'd have to get out my 3.0e MM and I'm sure
the 3.5e MM is worded at least slightly different.
rip's timeline did use fluff text though, instead of crunch.
He didn't/doesn't seem to be a C.O.-type at all.  (not a problem)
Maybe Lords Of Madness supercedes?

Right.  That's why time travel sucks.  The Illithids always win.

I remember very late at the end of the old Psi-board,
one of the (much) older posters wrote up a very long
harmonization of the various Illithid texts, including CPsi.
Something like a Cosmic Marvel continuity fix.
I've no idea if it's still available back there.
Or what it's called / how to find it.

Amechra, can I get a run-down on the Runes of Celedon chapter you mentioned?

It really isn't too impressive; basically, it is a feat you can take that gives you extra options for your Glyph of Warding which scale by CL.

If you can't cast Glyph of Warding, you can create a glyph, and shove in a spell to grant the glyph a CL equal to twice the spell level.

It adds some interesting effects; my favorites are the glyph that sends you flying 10' per CL straight up and another Glyph that forces evil outsiders to make a will save to pass through that square (evil outsiders with less HD then the CL get no save.)

Seriously, why?
Because they want to create cool options for DMs but they don't want players to be able to take them (possibly for balance reasons, not that it really helps to actually do that but oh well).
