Duskblade channel spell + Celerity... hold the charge?
« on: July 18, 2013, 01:01:25 PM »
I'm running a Gestalt game.  One of my PC's is a Barbarian 12/Duskblade 3//Beguiler 14/Mindbender 1.

If he used Eclectic Learning (variant of Advanced Learning from the PHB2) to pick up Celerity as a known Beguiler spell, and then channeled Overwhelm into his sword, missed with his attack, then cast Celerity as an immediate action (essentially as his swift action for the same turn) to get an extra standard action, would his channeled spell still "hold the charge" on the Overwhelm spell, since his turn has not yet ended?

Quote from: Duskblade
Arcane Channeling (Su): Beginning at 3rd level, you can use a standard action to cast any touch spell you know and deliver the spell through your weapon with a melee attack. Casting a spell in this manner does not provoke attacks of opportunity. The spell must have a casting time of 1 standard action or less. If the melee attack is successful, the attack deals damage normally; then the effect of the spell is resolved.

At 13th level, you can cast any touch spell you know as part of a full attack action, and the spell affects each target you hit in melee combat that round. Doing so discharges the spell at the end of the round, in the case of a touch spell that would otherwise last longer than 1 round.

Also, you are never able to "hold the charge" on a channeled spell, correct?  It doesn't ever last beyond your current turn?

*In full disclosure, the Beguiler would actually be using 3.0 Haste, granting an extra standard action per round.  I just framed the question with Celerity, so that it was applicable to 3.5 RAW.

Actually, if you miss, you can hold the charge and discharge it on your next hit.  But when you cast another spell (ie Celerity), the charge disappates --  so you're lucky you're using a previously cast Haste instead.

From the FAQ
Quote
When a duskblade (PH2 20) uses arcane channeling to
deliver a spell but misses with the weapon attack, is the
spell discharged or can he try to deliver the spell again on
his next turn?

This follows the normal rule for touch spells; that is, a
melee touch spell that misses its target is not discharged.
However, when using the improved version of this class
feature gained at 13th level, the spell is discharged at the end of
the round regardless of whether you hit or not (as described on
page 20).

Is the charge held in his hand as normal for the Holding the Charge rules, or in the weapon?
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

I've always played it as "in the weapon", but my DM required that i keep a hand on the weapon to keep it there, so it doesn't really make a difference :tongue
