What happens when a caster loses their stat item?
« on: August 03, 2013, 10:08:23 PM »
Not sure if this is a common question, but I'm AFB so here it is. What happens if a caster is (for whatever reason) deprived of their casting stat item?

Say an Int 22 wizard loses their +6 int item, costing them a 7th, 8th and 9th slot. Presumably we roll for which spells are lost? If the item is retreived on the same day, does the wizard regain the prepared spells, the slots as unprepared (and hence must prepare them again), or does it not apply until she rests?

Alternatively if a spontaneous caster (for some reason I have duskblade in mind) loses their stat item and hence loses the related slots, do they regain them if the item is recovered on the same day?

Rolling for which slots are lost with a prepared caster is probably the best bet.  I don't recall if that method is specified as RAW, but it is so reasonable that I imagine most tables wouldn't even have considered it a house rule to play it that way.

As for the other stuff, I'd have to look at the casting rules again.  I'd recommend starting at http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/magicOverview.htm though.

I've always done it randomly.  And I've played that once lost, you don't regain the spells even if you regain the stat booster, until you have time to study/meditate/pray/whatever.

I can't find a specific rule for this though.

... and a Int (22 minus 6) caster would no longer by able
to cast the level 7+'s, losing the slots + spells.

Random as to which spells or spell slots lost, sounds about right.

If you redonned the Item, you wouldn't get those spells/slots
back until the next day. (although I'm conjecturing)
Perhaps a Sorc could get the slots back = almost no change.

Agreed, I hover between 'need to prepare them again' and just plain 'don't get them back'.

I can't find a specific rule for this though.

Nor I. I'll probably end up ruling that they're plain lost until the next day.

Thanks for the help guys :)

We do it at random spells lost for thr day, which makes amf particularly nasty.
