Optimizing Primitive Caster+Elder Giant Magic: What Spells?
« on: October 17, 2013, 02:34:08 PM »
These two feats add up to a +3 bonus to your CL each (PC being the hardest to qualify for the full bonus, as few un-metamagic'ed spells lack all components). What spells can be used with both, for a potential +6 bonus to the CL? Alternatively, what ways are there to get free Silent+Still Spell benefits without using metamagic rods or Sudden Silent/Still?

Ideally, the spell is one that can be used out of combat to not risk EGM screwing you over. Also, thanks to Uncanny Forethought it's possible to use any Wizard spell with EGM, so go wild with those.

Isn't there a couple of Divine spells that have just DF as their component?

You can remove the verbal components from spells with a mask of silent casting (Dungeon 90, p106).  It's 56,000 gp, but it affects all your spells with no activation.  I've never found a good way of removing somatic components.

Not a spell but invocations and soulmelds both can benefit.

A Legacy Item can give me Still Spell a couple of times per day. A custom one that never goes into the Lesser rank would likely suffice.

Not a spell but invocations and soulmelds both can benefit.

The feats say spells, and EGM has a clause that only creatures of the Giant type can use the feat with SLAs. Soulmelds also aren't "cast", so I doubt they could be affected.

I just looked that up over here which is totally different from the book. Was there an errata? Used to be giant type as a special prereq.

As for soulmelds they are in this weird state between sp and su. Since spells are fully transparent to them the reverse should also be true, even if not stated, otherwise its a one-way mirror not a window. 2c

Shadowcraft Mages can cast almost all their spells with Silent Image, which should help significantly.

Spells are transparent, but it's one-way by RAW. And even then, feats that affect spells don't affect soulmelds equally, just like with Psionic/Magic Transparency. EGM has the prereqs of either Giant type or Spellcraft 9 ranks. Why D&D Tools is missing the Giant option is beyond me. Bad Copypasta I guess.

Unless a Soulmeld grants an SLA to a Giant, they are completely ineligible for EGM.

Incantatrix and Dweomerkeeper both give -1 to the cost of applying metamagic.  Silent and Still Spell. :)

I also have had a similar idea before of a Primordial Half-Giant with Primitive Caster + Elder Giant Magic + Reserves of Strength getting +9 caster level.  Powerful build allows for some fun roleplaying potential of that crazy giant barbarian with a large greataxe waving the weapon around and shouting gibberish for three turns until suddenly throwing a 13d6 fireball and landing on his ass, all hurt from it.

Have mentioned this before but, Artificer + elder giant magic works quite well. Sadly primitive caster is much more difficult to work with spell/power/infusion users except in special cases.

Incantatrix has a clause that the metamagic is at -1 level, to a minimum of 1. Don't know about Dweomerkeeper.
