Dual Monitor advice
« on: October 23, 2013, 02:10:50 PM »
hey everyone, i think this is the first time i posted in this section.

i'm trying to set up 2 monitors for my PC, but am having trouble and can't seem to find anything online to help.

(click to show/hide)

i can't find whether my old single-core cpu is good enough?
i plug the second monitor into the DVI with a DVI-A - VGA converter and the new monitor appears and the one in the VGA input turns off.
i unplugged the new monitor and then the old appears.
i plugged the new monitor into the converter and plugged it into one of my USB 3.0 inputs and loaded the proper drivers from the site (the CD didn't work).

i tried playing around with the display controls to extend the desktop (after not being able to access the window, since it was on the new blank monitor), but was worried about switching the primary to the blank, which i would then be stuck.

i saw that the converter requires dual-core, so that's probably out.

When's the last time you updated your drivers?

Is there any particular reason you're still running XP other than fuck Vista, 7 and 8?

I'm used to it. I guess I had older games that only ran on XP, but haven't played them for years. Some of my really old dnd docs are in WordPerfect :P

I could see if my wife has something newer. I've never reloaded the OS since I got it new ~11 yrs ago. I was kind of afraid of screwing things up. I do have those original cds.

I've updated all the drivers for the converter. Are the others drivers updated with the 'auto-update' ?

Display drivers are not auto-updated unfortunately.  If you have 32 bit XP this should be the most up to date driver, or for 64.

It's been a while since I have played with XP, but that's what they have on my work computer, so I'll mess around on there for a bit and see if I can remember the exact steps.

giving the update a try

edit: it looks like the drivers installed and a Catalyst Control Center program.
I'll give it a try tmw.
I did find my wife's old Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate.
