RAW Archivist Spell List and Spell Completion/Trigger items
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:36:26 PM »
By RAW, what is the Archivist's spell list?

Take an Archivist who finds a Divine scroll of Fireball, but has never learned the spell before.

  • Can he cast from the scroll before he learns the spell?
  • If the Archivist scribes it into his prayerbook, and then finds another scroll of Fireball, can he cast that?

At the moment, I'm just looking for a RAW answer to this.

RAW, there is no archivist spell list.  It draws from the spell lists of other classes (all divine ones)

So, can the Archivist cast the scroll then? To quote from the Rules Compendium:

Activation Requirements: To have any chance of activating a scroll, the user must meet the following requirements... The user must have the spell on his class list.

I count the archivist's list as all cleric spells, plus any spell he has scribed into his prayerbook.

Via UMD, yes.  But there is no divine Fireball so it is not on his class list.

There are divine fireballs.  Favoured Souls can take a variant that gives them any Sorcerer/Wizard spell 6th level or below.

There's other ways to.

Do you have a source/link for this?  I couldn't find it in either ACF handbook.  It sounds awesome, I would like to use it for my own FS.

Edit:  Nevermind, I was overlooking the line in favored of bahamut that said add a sorc spell to your list.

If you use 3.0 material, then a Hexer (Masters of the Wild) could also produce a divine Fireball scroll.

Sorry guys, I should clarify, my question is not whether the Archivist can find a divine version of Fireball. You can essentially substitute that for any spell you want.

The question is, what is the Archivist's spell list? If an Archivist finds a non-Cleric divine scroll that he hasn't yet scribed into his prayerbook, can he cast it from the scroll without relying on UMD or similar?

No.

Quote
An archivist casts divine spells, drawn primarily from the cleric spell list although he can eventually uncover, learn, and prepare noncleric divine spells spells.
That "eventually" happens when he adds said spells to his prayerbook.
