I just got my copy of Exploding Kittens in the mail today!  So glad I backed that Kickstarter!

I did too!  My roommate did as well, I'm waiting for him to get home so we can open ours together.

The only hint I'm going to give about the super-secret surprise is that you want to open your box in a well-lit area ...

Haha, I am amused by the secret surprise but I know I'll eventually get tired of it.

Found out I don't even get tipsy until past 10 shots of hard rum.  I'll use this fact to still be responsible for others while socially drinking.

So, got this the other day (spoilered for size):
(click to show/hide)

It's the cover for the next story I've written, and it's set in the world I created as a homebrew on BG. Which is cool. It'll be my 15th? 16th? published piece (Depends on when it comes out relative to an anthology I've worked on). If anyone's curious about my writing, PM me - I tend not to give out my real name too often on gaming boards :P

It's always proposed, and then it's always shot down as being too expensive, too dangerous, and also impossible to build with current materials...

That's because you people don't put enough effort into it.

I mean, it is probably inferior to setting up missions to L4 or L5 and shoving a station or two there... I dunno, I'd have to check the Δv for the missions.

It turns out that a lot of space stuff is easier if you plan your itinerary right.

They're building a test rig next year, that's only 1.5 km tall.  They're still securing funding, but it's an interesting new solution to the issue of space elevators.  This one might help us put on into geosynchronous orbit and drop a cable back, and it seems to solve some of the issue we would have with building a free standing elevator.  And, as I believe that article points out, starting out above 20 km up would save something like 35% of the fuel costs to achieve orbit (as a result of not needing to get to that point and not having to bring the fuel needed to get there to that point).  As far as materials go, we can't build the cable method yet.  however, this team seems to have the ability to construct this one with current materials, because it's not the cable method.  They're done the math, they've done some materials study, and they've done some concepts.  next step is testing that 1.5 km structure.

It's amazing how even with all our knowledge and planning, trial and error is still a necessary step for the development process.

I hear you guys on the fuel, but won't that need for fuel simply be replaced by a need for energy, since something has to actually POWER that elevator?

Only technically yes.  See, with the elevator, it doesn't matter how fast you go or how much you bring, because you're anchored to the Earth still.  So you can get power from any source possible, not just rocket fuel which is the only thing we have now that both powerful enough and gentle enough to lift a ship to this height and still keep it and the Earth intact.  Planes aren't powerful enough for cargo ships (although we can send some craft via plane, see SpaceX for this method), it's still not as efficient as an elevator.  This can use solar, nuclear, fossil, tidal, anything.  It just needs electricity.  And not only that, it cuts down on staging, meaning less waste in terms of stages getting destroyed/damaged/used up.  And finally, the biggest savings is the fact that you don't need the fuel to get the fuel to the place where you use the fuel with an elevator.  Meaning you don't need a rocket capable of lifting 1.3 times as much fuel as is needed anymore (see: rocket equation).
