I'm going to a public state school; I live in state, so my tuition is about $3000 a semester. Along with miscellaneous other fees, it comes to about $4000 dollars a semester.
I'm from a middlingly poor family (New York State has a program where, if your family had a small enough income, your lunch was a quarter. I qualified.), which combined with my pretty good academics gives me about $5000 dollars in combined financial aid from the State and from the Fed.
I also have $2200 in scholarships (well, sholarship; one local scholarship that you can only get if you live within a select number of counties in Upstate New York), which, if I keep my grades up, will only increase.
Combine this with the fact that my college is ranked in the top hundred universities (private and public) in the US, and... yeah.
The school owes me ~$1000 dollars now. And the scholarship will get refunded straight to me; I'll probably use it to pay rent.
