I don't think i mentioned this. Two days ago i managed to open my father's locked drawer in his former workplace that he forgot the key to with two paperclips improvised into a tension wrench and a simple hook lockpick.

He now promised he'd buy me my full set of professional lockpicks. Finally, i'm going to be able to really get into the hobby! HOORAY FOR NEAR-USELESS SKILL SETS!!

Also, i'd totally recommend it to anyone and everyone. It's a really satisfying feeling when you've been working the tumblers for a good 4-5 minutes and suddenly you get a full cylinder turn. It's nearly meditative. You're there, messing around with the tumblers, the springs, trying to navigate the false sets, resetting them, raking, and you absolutely CAN'T LOSE YOUR FOCUS. You're forced to be patient in order to be able to feel each individual tumbler setting. If you're not a patient person, you're going to become one. Not to mention you can't put too much tension on the cylinder otherwise you're not going to have a set.

It's amazing. Just remembering that i did it with improvised tools makes me feel like a boss. Plus, everyone in my father's work looked at me like i was some kind of MacGyver.

Being compared to MacGyver is pretty awesome.

can't say if compliment or not lol

It's definitely not completely useless - someone sometime will forget their keys and if they know you might call on you for help, or, even you are sometimes forgetful and might need it... Plus, it kind of overlaps with the necessary knowledge for a lock change, which is something that, if you can do yourself, can save you money.

I don't know if i'll ever delve any deeper into the hobby, but rekeying is a thing, too. Take an existing lock, change the tumblers around and make a new matching key.

For now i'm just happy to be able to unlock cheap padlocks & 4-5 pin locks. Fulfilling and meditative!

lock circumvention is practically part of our shops qualification procedure. the only ones we have real trouble with are the (abundant) Abloy locks.

have have go so far as to try casting keys from molds....

Holy crap, that's a complicated lock. However i managed to find a video from Bosnian Bill that showcases an exploit you can use in order to circumvent the complicated core altogether.

It's sort-of a destructive way of defeating the lock, but as you can see by the end of the video, he shows that the core is still working, the only thing that broke was the little copper retention ring that holds the core inside of the lock assembly. Replace that, and the lock should go back to functioning condition.

You work as a locksmith?

Ouch, yeah, no go. Some guys say they have specialized tools that they claim can unlock abloys, but i wouldn't hold my breath. 99% of the comments on every thread about Abloy padlocks i've read says that they are unpickable and that you're better off steering clear off of them for now. Here's the video of the guy that claims to have a tool for picking Abloys.

I'm skeptical. Video doesn't show how exactly the pick works, and no disassembly of the lock afterwards to show that it wasn't tampered with. Heck, for all we know, that crazy looking pick might just be enclosing the actual key and all the twisting and turning is for show. Lots of attention whores in the internet. Guy also claimed that he was going to do a more in-depth video, but hasn't done anything in over a year. So yeah. Take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know if i'll ever move on to the really complicated complex high security lock systems, because for me, at least for now, just picking regular cheap run-of-the-mill locks, padlocks & bike locks is more than enough.

There are multiple companies here who make a living off forgetful or foolish people.  It might not keep you fat with cash but it'd be a living.

This. I want this.
I need to read the series again. I'm pretty sure I've read all of the books (the original series, and the various extras and prequels and sequels published by him and his son), but it was a while ago and I don't remember much about them other than the fact that they were awesome.

Significant water too.  Unfortunately it almost certainly doesn't have life.  Chlorates and perchlorates are just awful.  And the water would be saturated with them.
