Boost/Stance (ToB) + Whirling Blade?
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:13:11 AM »
Can you combine these, to get the benefits of a Boost and/or Stance on all attacks made with the Whirling Blade spell? My warbard wants to know!

Punishing Stance + DFI + Whirling Blade = nice line attack!

Also, what if I have a Sudden Stunning weapon? Could I cause all of them to save vs. stun, or just the first one?

Well, the spell mentions:
Quote from: Whirling Blade
Whirling Blade
[...]
The weapon deals damage just as if you had swung it in melee, including any bonuses you might have from ability scores or feats.

The text doesn't mention if class abilities are included, but it does mention it's like you swung your weapon in melee. I guess it's reasonable to assume, for example, that if a rogue catches an opponent w/o a DEX bonus it could use it's sneak attack. Stances are fair game too, IMO.

"Sudden Stunning" requires a swift action to activate AND a successful melee attack, so it will work for as many swift actions (and successful attacks) you have available - usually 1. The way i read it, it applies once for each attack you succeed.

Oooooh, here's another one: Wraithstrike + Power Attack + Whirling Blade. Seems like you might even be able to "swing" it with two hands.  :smirk

Yup, that will work!
...and that's exactly what my power attacking greatsword wielding Duskblade is counting on! ;) It's a pity i can't squeeze a spell channeling in there too.

uuh, that sounds so legally weird it's almost scary... and the worst part is that it can actually increase the line range to 120ft.

I suppose you don't get to attack yourself when you throw the blade in a 20ft radius, do you? :tongue

It's not that scary... well, it is kinda scary...

I think you would be at risk if you were inside your own burst, though... hard to say.  You can do it at range, though.

Naw, you guys have the best way to use it all wrong:

Toss Arcane Archer 2 on there, and use Imbue Arrow to fire your burst of melee attacks out to ludicrous distances.

AA2 needs it to be an Area spell? that needs resolved?

while i do like the idea of firing a dozen (guess) whirling imbued arrows in to a field of fodder from miles away, im curious about the limitations this places on the damage your gonna do per whirled target and per arrow hit target.

is the damage going to be limited to how spiffy your bow/arrows are?

Naw, you get a Mouthpick weapon, and use that.

Can't afford the feat.  :eh I guess in theory I could try to get a MM Rod, but those are expensive at my level (6th).

With a rod it may be hard to pull off casting the spells and send the two-handed blade on it's way.

Once you can afford it (i guess it could take a while), combine it with a nice "Glove of Casting" (MIC, 20k), so you don't have to actually hold the rod to use it.

EDIT: personally, i'm planning on putting the spell in an Eternal Wand (since it's not in the Duskblade's spell list), and in a wand chamber. I think there's a feat or item out there that allows me to use metamagic with wands, but i'm kind of feat starved too...

Whirling Blade isn't an area spell, so it can't be sculpted.  That's an Effect line, not an Area line.

Wow! What an interesting observation! Yeah, Lightning Bolt has an area line, whereas Whirling Blade doesn't. So no Sculpting!

I was always under the impression that it was a typo since there are not really any Effect:line spells.

@ksbsnowowl: Just when i was starting to find some more nasty uses for this spell, you go and wash it all away with RAW >:(  Nah j/k, you're right!

@deadkitten: There's no errata on this, so it's not a typo...

So how would it work with a reach weapon?
In one campaign I was using it with the whip dagger and widen spell and sculpt spell for hilarity. bu I seem to have used it wrong.

I am so disappointed that Whirling Blade can't be sculpted by RAW.

As for reach weapons, the spell doesn't care if the weapon has reach.  You just get that attack against those targets.
