Requesting help with a Dread Necromancer
« on: March 04, 2014, 06:06:31 AM »
Hello All!

I am hoping that I could get some help making/designing a Dread Necromancer for an up coming game.

Character Creation Details -

Level 6
No Alignment Restrictions
Stats: 12, 14, 15, 17, 17, 16
Races only from allowed sources
Wealth: WBL

Allowed Sources:
PHB1
MM 1 & 2
DMG
Complete Adventurer, Arcane, Mage, Warrior, Divine
Expanded Psionic
Exemplars of Evil
Book of Vile Darkness
Oriental Adventures
Fiend Folio
Savage Species
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting
Hero's of Horror
Hordes of the abyss
Complete Psionic
Libris Mortis
Spell Compendium
Heroes of Battle

I have done some reading, and looking around. I have seen some people reccomend going full 20, and some say to take Pale Master. Any help you guys could provide would be very appreciated, thanks!

Just to confirm, when you say that you've done some reading, can we assume that you've read all three handbooks linked to in the handbooks section? I don't mean to sound snarky; they do contradict each other fairly often and I can understand wanting some clarification. We just need to know where you're coming from.

What do you want to achieve with this character? Minion-Master, Ultimate Debuffer, Fearbot, Goofy Sidekick, or something completely different?

What is the rest of your group like? Do they tend to optimise?

Do you know what type of campaign you're going into? Will you be going up against clerics and paladins often? Is it ok to play an evil character, or will this cause problems with the rest of the party? Is it ok to play an undead character, or will you be turned within the first 5 minutes of the first session?

If you don't want to or can't answer the above, that's fine - but the more information you give us, the more we can help you.

[edit]: Also, how is your DM handling EXP? Becoming a Necropolitan is a very attractive option, but you'll want to clarify exactly what the loss of a level (NOT LA) means at character creation.

I have read all three of those, and they each gave good information - and also created some confusion.

The campaign is actually going to be a PbP game, so I don't know what everyone else wil be as of yet. Evil alignment is fine, and seems to be leading the pack.

Looks like it is going to be a sandbox type game. I am not sure how the GM and Co-GM are going to handle XP.

I was hoping to play a minion-master type character.

I'd say screw Pale Master. All it really offers are some immunities that you can get just by being undead, and free Animate Dead. Be a necropolitan (with all the cheese you can manage). Go at least to DN 8. Then you might consider fiend blooded for an expanded spell list, but DN 20 is perfectly valid.

Also, check out this thread.

I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

Hello rhal,

I made a topic on the dread necromancer not to long ago and had some great help.

Dread Necromancer

perhaps its not exactly what you are looking for and some books used might not be allowed in your campaign but i hope it helps.
