Bags of Holding + Portable Hole + Force Cage Cunundrum
« on: March 10, 2014, 09:52:29 AM »
We have a wizard inside a solid cube force cage created inside a portable hole.

What would happen if a bag of holding was thrown into said portable hole?

The theoretical physics of it boggles my mind.  :???

the volume of non-dimensional space contained within the portable hole would become part of the astral void, and any contents would find themselves there.

Effectivelly, you have an extradimensinal space inside an other. No matter what's in either, that action will trigger the implosion thinggy.

if it helps you, the forcecage isn't moving in the traditional sense, the non-dimensional space is gaining astral attune-ment (or reverting thereunto, depending on the detailed campaign mechanics, if any).

Ahh ... (one-upping evul scientist voice) ... but what vould happen herr doc'tors, if the Force Cage was created + still inside a Bag Of Holding, and then that bag was put into a Portable Hole?

Ohh and and , what vould happen if the Wizard had a Dimension Lock cast on him before being put into the Force Cage?

*ahem*

The planar rift would occur, however, the force cage being inside the dimensional claudication will find itself on the astral side of the rift. Besides, there is no mention of the force cage being immovable. The only similarity with Wall of Force is the methods of destruction. Also, any means of astral travel can escape a Force Cage... so the planar effect might simply draw the occupants through the astral openings in the Force Cage, probably a somewhat uncomfortable experience, to say the least.

A dimensional lock does not protect against planar rift or planar breech effects.

Should the DM wish to allow a check anyway, the dimensional lock effect would have to beat the spell DC equivalent of the rift/breech's strength under the clause of directly conflicting effects. Even if the result was ruled to succeed, once the dimensional lock effect wore off, the end result would be the same.

Hmmm I appreciate the info.

About how long would you reason the Astral rift would last?

...  :??? ... interesting question.

There may be info in the Manual Of The Planes.
Otherwise the two magic item entries say nothing else.
Like how big is the "rift"?

i believe the rift is the size of "plot" and the duration is also as long as "plot" calls for.

there is also the possibility that the planar rift (a term used nowhere else that I can find offhand) is the same as a complete planar breech as described in the planar handbook.
