How fast is too fast?
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:46:14 PM »
So while i was working on my friends character (mentioned in my other thread) i came across 'Footsteps of the Divine' a spell i am finding more and more hilarious as time passes by.

The spell itself is pretty good, it gives you a new mode of movement, or improves your land-based movement speed. The real kicker is in its expended effect. You can give up the rest of the duration of the spell in order to gain +10ft per round it would have lasted for otherwise for a short burst of inhuman speed. So i got to thinking.. just how fast can you make this go?

Persist the spell for 24 hours, then expending it should give you 144,000ft for 1 round. Charging doubles this speed to 288,000ft. Next we incorporate Rapid Wrath, a short spear that doubles movement speed again, giving us 576000ft for 1 round. If the spell is both persisted and extended, technically this should give us 1,152,000ft for 1 round (218 miles). Each round is 6 seconds, so dividing this by 6 gives us 192000 feet per second, or Mach 170.

For 1 round you charge at Mach 170....

What happens? :|

Im thinking the two collide and blood and guts and eyeballs are sent flying for 218 miles in the direction charged at. lol

I could be totally wrong and my math all wrong but its an amusing thought xP

What happens: nothing. D&D does not incorporate a physics engine. You just move really really far over six seconds, still worse than teleporting and you might run into something.

It does, however, let you make an insane jump check. And, following on from that, there's an ability somewhere that lets you turn any skill check into a diplomacy check (or something), thus making everyone you jump over fanatically loyal to you as you arc over miles and miles of land.

Meet Chuck E. Cheese.
By the way, this was nerfed in Errata. It no longer works. I think it was nerfed specifically in response to Chuck.  :D
Copied onto this board.

At least you reminded me to bump the thread. Should stay wayback-proof for a few more years.

Small problem with this. Persistent Spell doesn't work with spells whose effects are discharged. It doesn't say discharge in the duration line, but it's right there in the second to last sentence of Footsteps of the Divine where it talks about the massive speed boost.

Add anthro cheetah to the mix.  Once an hour it can charge at 10 times its base land speed.

But yeah, because Persistent Spell says it can't be used on "spells whose effects are discharged" the combo doesn't work anymore since Footsteps of the Divine specifically says it's a discharge effect.

That was added in the Errata, which I mentioned in my post. Originally Persistent Spell didn't prohibit using it on discharged spells.

hmm ... as a separate but similar question ...

Is there any way to tag a Teleport effect (like 4e eh?)
onto the 1 million+ attacks build?

Otherwise I'd say Action Abuse + Safe Teleports.
If you could stack Plane Shifts into that and/or a trip
to the Far Realms while we're at it ??

I vaguely recall a Storm or wtf , that could hurl someone
from the Ethereal to the Astral.  That's really far.
Some way to make one of those happen, instead of it being an encounter.
Things that Rip Holes In Reality are in this category.

I get the impression the Terminator and Monty builds
could be hacked up for lesser purposes than killing Pun-pun.
(heresy ftw)
