Spending XP
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:01:40 AM »
Let's say I am playing a Wizard. I reach level six and grab Craft Wondrous Item. I immediately craft something, and spend XP. I am now below the XP threshold for sixth level. Do I lose that level? Can I spend that XP? I do not believe you lose the level, but one of the members of my group disagrees. Was this question definitively answered anywhere?
What would you think if I sang out of tune?

IIRC, you can't spend enough XP to lose a level, but you can "save" the XP and choose not to advance a level, then use it later for item crafting, etc.

I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

A character cannot spend so much XP on an
item that he or she loses a level. However, upon gaining enough XP
to attain a new level, he or she can immediately expend XP on
creating an item rather than keeping the XP to advance a level.

So you definitely can't level drain yourself, and "saving" the xp isn't RAW, though having to stop mid-combat to craft your item because you dinged on monster 3 of 7 seems unreasonable.

Well... it all depends on what you think "immediately" means in that sentence. Obviously they don't expect you to stop mid-combat to start crafting. So it basically amounts to the same thing as "saving it up".
