[3.5] Better off Ted
« on: June 23, 2014, 11:22:59 PM »
Working on a character as a silent protest to having the npc array as our stats. Fight the powa and all that. Character's name is Ted, and his absolutely pathetic. (Took the flaw :D )

Stat array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Level is 10
Currently assume all wizard of the coast books are available.

How can we max/min the character while not outright just gimping him?

Any class?  You might want something either extremely SAD, or something that isn't dependent on much at all.  Have you tried binders?  While they're technically Charisma based... not really.

Well, I've got the limits to the books I can use now.

Compete Series
PHB1, PHB2 DMG1 DMG2
Monster Manuals 1-5

So Im making him a lucky bastard.

When in doubt, druid it out.  Your physical scores will be replaced (well, Con's still important still) and if you cast buffs and use summons even Wisdom doesn't need to climb over a 19.

Well the goal is to be absolutely pathetic honestly. Its easy to do it by taking one level in every class, but too obvious. At the same time not being a total gimp.

Ah, so we're not trying to make do with bad stats then?

Hmmm, lesse.  You could try Commoner 1/Survivor 5.  That's Savage Species though I think, so it may not fly.

I suppose I'd have to understand the end goal more to be of more help, sorry.

Bummer.  I was hoping this thread would tie in more with the tv show.  I loved that thing.

How about a sword and board fighter, without Leap Attack or charge shennanigans?  When you're doing a d8+6 damage, the patheticness will shine.  For that matter, why not simply take the 10th level NPC fighter straight out of the DMG?

Ditto.  Well, my wife was really the fan.  A "Ted" D&D build would have amused her to no end.

+1. If you want to be pathetic and useless, this is the path to greatness.

Although it's pretty easy to make a decent character using that stat array... I think you're really whining about nothing. :P

I know I'm whining about nothing. Its an okay stat array.. but well, I'm used to higher level of point buy stuff. I just feel rather restricted.

And well, I'm not working for the company that Ted worked for in the TV show. However this character is designed to be an every day man, who just luckily has everything work out for him with a high luck pool.

Agreed.  But, more to the point, it's mostly a giant neon sign saying "PLAY A CASTER!  PLAY A CASTER!"  Granted, D&D already has more than a few of those, but I don't think I'd look favorably upon house rules that look to gimp the oh so powerful MAD classes like Paladins, Monks, and Rangers ...

When I first heard we were doing 3.5, I wanted to play a skill monkey rogue actually and go into exemplar. But a 15 int, 14 dex does not well a skill monkey make Imo.

Going about a different direction, with Unbeliever's "Play a caster! Play a caster" thing, I kinda agree, but another idea that has come into my head is playing a bard that goes into sublime cord.

Sublime Chord is the wrong path if you want to build a character that sucks... but if you're going the other direction, Druid is really your best friend. Alternatively, throw on a level of savage progression ghost and go into MotUH.  :D

Savage progression ghost?

A possibility is that he says all the monster manuals are open for player use. except for half breeds. (Which I'd so do a changeling if i could then)

However I just found a Flind Gnoll. So its 4 levels. But I could possibly use it to do Fool King, my squeezebox gnoll.

You can have PCs work fine, independently of
iffy base stats, you just have to work at it a little.

Even in Core, there are Tomes and Wishes,
and various stat bumps like Wildshape or Polymorph.

The standard gnoll isn't that bad for a monstrous PC... Where is the flind, again?
