Fist of Stone + handheld weapons
« on: June 26, 2014, 03:35:18 AM »
One of my groupmates says i cant use the strenght bonus from the spell with handheld weapons, just with unarmed strikes and the slam attack the spell gives me. I read the spell over and over and it doesnt say anything about it. Who's right?

In case i'm right, using a 2h weapon, how'd it work? I use the bonus strenght on the attack, but not on dmg, cuz there's no buff on the other hand.

Fist of Stone
Quote
You transform one of your hands into a mighty fist of living stone, gaining a +6 enhancement bonus to Strength for the purpose of attack rolls, grapple checks or breaking and crushing items. In addition, you gain the ability to make one natural slam attack, dealing 1d6 points of damage + your new Strength bonus (or 1-1/2 times your Strength bonus if you make no other attacks in that round). You can make the slam attack as a natural secondary attack, with the normal -5 penalty, or a -2 penalty if you have the Multiattack feat (MM 304), as part of a full attack action. However, you cannot gain more than one slam attack per round with this spell due to a high base attack bonus (+6 or higher).

Your fist undergoes no change in size or form, remaining as flexible and responsive as it would normally be while under the spell's effect.

I agree with you.  The extra strength can be used with any handheld weapon.
I would say the part of the spell that refers to just one hand is a bit of fluff, and the important part is you gain a +6 Str enhancement.  Your 2H weapon would get the bonus to damage.

Good luck!

Gonna be a dick here and point out the RAW.

It applies to ALL attack rolls, but says nothing about applying to all DAMAGE rolls.

Quote from: PHB
attack roll: A roll to determine whether an attack hits.

Only the slam attack gets extra damage. So any sword gets +3 to hit, but not +3 damage.

Now THAT is wrong. The RAW and RAI are quite clear here. +3 to hit, but no bonus to damage with a weapon. There's no bones about it.

Since it's explicitly giving you a natural weapon, you get to make an attack with it. It's a free action to add or remove a hand with a 2 Handed weapon. Make all your normal weapon attacks, take your hand off, make your Slam attack at full BAB -5, put your hand back on.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Oh yeah. But he should still get the +3 to hit with the 2HW. Rules is rules man. Fist of stone is a nice spell, but it makes a wizard a melee fighter, which is something most wizards should avoid. Plus it's an enhancement bonus. Almost everything that adds to strength is an enhancement bonus. It stacks with next to nothing.
